Hi,

I'm wanting to get a UHF aerial attached to an existing vhf aerial mount. It's on a high roof and on a high pole on top of that so I'd rather pay someone to do it as I don't have the right ladders, etc. Cabling into the house/ internal splitters, etc already exist so it would just be the aerial, diplexer, maybe a small mount to attach to the existing pole (?) and the labour.

What would be a good price for this? Would it be cheaper for me to buy my own aerial & diplexer and have the guy install it? Can anyone recommend a good (& cheap) Auckland (North Shore) installer?

How old is the cabling as some OLD vhf aerial cable is too thin for uhf.

The Chances are the installer will install a aerial such as a "Gizmo" which carrys VHF and UHF down the same aerial, as they are around the same price as a UHF only aerial and remove the need for a second aerial.

I dont think the cabling is too old (it's not my house) but I can't be sure. Do you know the price for a gizmo and any idea what the installation cost should be?

Here are some replies I got from a few companies. I had an existing installation and wanted to replace the antenna and reroute the cable to a different spot.
I never got this done.

Hi ****** we can install an aerial for approx $200 and replace cable for approx $70 providing line of sight as free view DTT requires this

Hi *****,
Our standard aerial installation is $250.00, this includes aerial, mast,
cabling and labour. If we can utilize any of your existing materials this
will reduce your overall cost. The aerial we use is a Gizmo, its made in Chch
for Chch so it is able to get all the existing channels and is suitable for
Freeview HD as you require, it is not a big aerial but still has one long
element as this is required for channel One reception.
We can do the job anytime but just call us (or email) a couple of days
beforehand to confirm a time.

Sorry IMO the last thing you'd want is a 'gizmo',it's not selective enough.

A UHF install to one outlet is approx $200/250 but there are a few questions to be asked /answered

How many splits ?

What quality cable ?

Any idea what signal levels you might expect ?

I would avoid buying yourself unless you know the answer to the above
and your confident they all meet specs

Actually the Gizmo (303AKL for Auckland) is a really good aerial, for it's size it picks up very near as much signal as much larger combo aerials like the PF15, and is often even close to the levels of seperate UHF/VHF aerials where there aren't major reception issues.
I've installed dozens of them over the years in CHC, and never had any problems. They're very well designed, and have a very clean and level signal slope compared to any other combo we tried.

I'm not sure what pricing would be like in AKL compared to CHC, but I don't imagine it should be far off.

A Gizmo should cost you no more than $100 excl gst or AX323 UHF equivalent a bit less than that
External diplexer - $20
Cable (to join aerial to diplexer) - $2 per meter for RG6
Labour, no more than 1 hour, it's a 15 minute job if they know what they are doing, and nothing else needs fixing - $60-$70

Total job - less than $200 incl GST. A swap for a combo usually comes out a bit cheaper than a UHF addon.
RG59 is the minimum cable you should use for UHF reception, RG6 is better. If the cable doesn't have a solid core (ie stranded copper), it will probably need replacing.

You're probably best to have the installer supply the gear, as they can choose what is required when they get there, and pricing should be about the same as retail from a store anyway.

I don't know any installers in AKL, though I contracted to Aerial Master in CHC for a while, so know they use good quality gear, and charge reasonably.

Hi Asmodeus,
I recently had a new aerial installed.I had an existing defunct UHF antenna on tall pole, existing VHF antenna on short pole from edge of roof.Installer replaced the UHF antenna with new UHF antenna, replaced all the cabling, installed a muxing doohickey so it's linked to the existing VHF antenna, and installed new cable into the house.The job was very successfull, the guy just tested with Prime reception from Waitarua (I'm in titirangi) and that was that.Freeview HD reception is perfect and awesome!Total cost for job was $300.
I'd recommend the guy and will advise his details if you'd like.
