hi guys

my family just purchased a new sony bravia kdlv46v4000 with built in freeview but it doesn't seem to be working. We have a UHF aerial which we plugged straight into the TV as specified on the website yet it does not find anything when trying to tune the TV. I checked on the freeview website to see if we would be in the coverage area and it said we were very likely to recieve the signal.

does anybody have any ideas?

Did you get any UHF channels such as Prime previously?

yup though a bit snowy on some channels but we still got them before

So you did get Prime? TV1/2/3 etc are not UHF so they are not that relevent. If you did get Prime how clear was the picture?

Odds are the issue will be signal related possibly due to poor cabling or damage to your existing UHF aerial,

o right we did get prime though it was fuzzy but stiill watchable.

so would getting a new UHF aerial solve the problem?

Probably - the current one may be OK but there could be issues with cabling that are causing signal loss.

Have you tried using an amplifier to boost the signal? I currently have one installed on my antenna wall port. Ever since getting it installed, Prime is better. Its still not as crystal clear as TV 2 and 3 however.

Maybe you could tell us what transmitter you are trying to receive a signal from, distance from transmitter and is there any terrain or buildings between you and the transmitter.

Adding an amplifier is unlikely to achieve anything unless it is added before the signal loss occurs, i.e., at the aerial before signal is lost over cable run.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

sorry i dont actually know where the closest transmitter is to me. i live in north shore auckland around northcote birkenhead area. ummm the terrain is sorta strange as its sorta like a valley like were near the bottom of 2 hills and no real tall buildings. though we did notice once the sky tower went up our tv reception somewhat diminished.

okay thanks for the advice didnt manage to find one anyways lol.

Your current UHF reception can only be from Waiatarua or Pinehill. Best to have an installer retask antenna to receive DVB-T H.264 off Skytower (assume it is visible as I don't live in Auckland). Polarity is vertical rather than horizontal.

retask as in point to sky tower? we can see the sky tower quite clearly from our house.

Yes, there are however no analog UHF transmitters on the Skytower so Prime will become no see.

thats fine as i already have sky. i just want free view so i can view the stuff in widescreen and hd
