Hi There, looking for help here please. I have a new Samsung series 8 TV with Free View built in. The set up I have is TV With Yamaha 3900 Receiver, B&W Speakers, Blue Ray BD, Seperate DVR, and Saturn Top Box. The BD & DVR are conected to the reveiver with HDMI Cables the Top Box is conected to the recevier with RCA plugs (I think that is what they are called) and the Receiver is conected to the TV with HDMI Cable.
Everything works well, BUT I have two problems. I can not get sound through the recevier for just the TV eg if I am watching freeview. I also can not record Free View on the DVR I can only get the chanels on the Saturn Box and I was hoping someone can tell me what I am doing wrong, How I can get the TV to have sound through the recevier and record on the DVR. This will be easy for someone I am sure. Cheers

As far as I am aware you cannot record from the built in tuner on your TV.

Thanks for that, so if I did not have Saturn and just had the DVR could I record from the TV?

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong here but I don't think any TV's with the built in HD tuner will output a signal to allow you to record it.

I think it's to do with copy protection for hi def sources.

So unfortunately I think you are out of luck. The only way you can record hi def freeview at the moment would be with a hi def set top box feeding a signal to your PVR and I think even then it would only be standard definition.

Not sure if the guys with a HTPC are able to record in hi def, I would assume so?

Firstly you can't record Freeview from the TV. The TV has no video output so there is no way of doing this. The only way you will be able to record TV shows is to use the build in tuner in your DVR or use your Saturn box.

With the audio issue I'm a bit lost as to how you have the TV hooked up to the amp. You mention a HDMI cable but a HDMI cable has no way of giving you audio from the TV to the amp so I'm at a loss as to how you have this hooked up.

If you want audio from your TV to your amp you need to hook a cable from the SPDIF output in the TV to the SPDIF input in your amp. Just be aware however that is the same firmware issue exists in this TV as the Series 6 and Series 7 you will not get AC3 5.1 on TV3, you will only get 2ch stereo on all Freeview channels.

Well that is a stuff up on Samaungs part. I have the sound through Saturn to the Amp so that is how the sound for TV is done. Can I use the optical outlet for sound to the amp for freeview TV?

I'm not quite sure what Samsung have done wrong?

I also don't quite understand howe you have things wired up - there isn't any way of getting audio from the TV to an amp using HDIMI. The TV has HDMI inputs, not outputs.

The SPDIF output is the standard method of getting audio from any brand of TV up to an amplifier. If you hook a cable from the TV to the amp then yes, you will get Freeview audio on your amp.
