I have an ASUS P5KR Motherboard, with free pci-e and pci slots.
My video card is nvidia 8800gt .
Running vista ultimate, with q6600 quad core and 2gig memory.
I want to put freeview HD dvb-t on my machine.
What hardware/software would be best? I'd like a remote too , and dual tuner too.

I've gone through these forums, and while there is a lot of information it is scattered. eg, I read once place the wintv nova 500 is good, then, in another that there is some software error for that card.
In other notes, I read that wintv does not work , nor does mce. So, how do you actually use the card? This confuses me, since the software that comes with the card should work since they are sold as freeview.
Anyway, if anyone has a good combination up and running please let me know. I need to know, the complete hardware and software.

Given that you've got PCI and PCE-I you'd be better with a hauppauge hvr2200 (dual DVB-T freeview|HD and Analogue Prime).

I take it freeview|HD you are after and not just freeview??

Anyway for freeview HD your video card is big enough. You main choices for software are GBPVR, MediaPortal or DVBViewer.

For all of these you will probably need a video codec to play the video (Cyberlink powerDVD 8 is the most popular as it supports hardware decoding - what will use that video card of yours). There is also Arcsoft Total Encoder (I think) and CoreAVC (coreAVC is free but I don't think it supports hardware decoding).

For audio you want the monogram codec.

I prefer GBPVR only because I've used it for a number of years before freeview came out. But whatever works for you.

How does the audio get routed internally? Maybe I will download the 2200 manual.

Not sure I follow....

Sound if taken from the airwaves and out into the recorded file (no effort needed by the PC - that is all done with the tuner card).

To playback however you need an appropriate audio codec (decoder) which in our case for freeview HD the best one (IMO) is monogram.

Then you plug speakers in normally to your headphone jack, or use some digital connection to an amplifier.../

I had an old tv tuner card, and it was necesary to plug the audio out on the card, into the audio in on the sound card. Was a bit rubbishy really.

I have now got the 2200 card, but I do have some issues with sound playback on recorded programs (ie, there is none) but otherwise it is working ok. Thanks

Got monogram installed? And what software are you using.

To prove the file is working use vlc, it does care about decoders so its a good acid test. then you can work on getting your proper software working.

I was using powercinema that came with the card.

I contacted the singapore hauppauge support, and they sent me an audio patch.

Have applied that, and all is working PERFECTLY! Thanks

I did notice some block artifacts on the HD demo channel but that seems minor.

Very happy now.

Digital TV cards are more like network cards compared to old analog TVTuners. All they do is receive digital data and the computer plays it just like it plays any ohter video or audio file.
