i was told by my installer this aerial would be suitable for digital freeview reception but every now & then the reception is pixelated and not entirely sure why - it seems to be random, and affects different channels randomly (sometimes tv1, or tv3 etc) ... particularly when using the twin tuners i.e. recording two channels at the same time.

does this aerial look ok for UHF? could the unit itself be faulty?its one of those jcmatthew DTRs

Its a Lincrad combo VHF/UHF, UHF part is the two short elements at the front. Should be OK close to a transmitter.

IME those are pretty bad antennas, friend had one and had massive ghosting on juice and digital dropouts all the time, put in the biggest UHF there is and it all came right.

BTW, we figured that since we were going on the roof anyway it wasnt worth getting anything but the biggest since the cost difference was less than the effort to change it if it still wasnt enough.

We use that aerial but is mounted vertical - perfect reception.
Go here to see if you need vertical or horizontal mounting: http://www.lincrad.co.nz/transmittersites.html

What sort of signal strength/quality are you getting? if your close to the transmitter site then that antenna should be ok otherwise find an old sky UHF yagi or get one from an antenna installer.

Amplifiers are to boost signal before a potential loss over the cable run. Simply amplifying a weak signal amplifies any noise, increasing bit error rate, and you achieve nothing. Replacing the antenna is more sensible.
