I have an LCD TV and receive transmissions via satellite (no terrestrial reception) in New Zealand.

I am using a Pioneer DVR-520H-S (80GB HDD) DVD recorder and two STB's to set up my reception and recording of TV transmissions.

I need the two STB's as I wish to view one channel on TV while I record another on the DVR. Both STB's can only tune one channel at a time.

At present, I have set up the system so that I can do what I want, but this arrangement restricts some of the attributes of the STB's and some from the DVR.

If I should attach a diagram, I might be able to explain the setup better, but the basic setup is as follows;

Antenna>>>Splitter-Antenna A>>>STB-A>>>Composite Leads (AV)>>>TV

STB-A>>>Composite Leads>>>DVR Recorder

Antenna>>>Splitter-Antenna B>>>STB-B>>>HDMI Lead>>>TV

DVR Recorder>>>Component Leads>>>TV

As you can see, the antenna leads only go into the STB's. and not into the DVR recorder. I have seen a couple of diagrams that suggest interconnecting the antenna outputs from some of the boxes, and other suggestions that say that there shouldn't be any antenna interconnection. Any suggestions.

If needbe, I can send STB and DVR spec's, connections, etc.

What exactly is the problem?

You say it restricts some aspects, could you expand on that please?

It looks like you have one dish, use a splitter and feed this into each STB.
If that's the case then this is a satellite signal so it can't go into the DVR recorder at all.

The solution (without knowing what the problem is) is to get a twin tuner satellite PVR and a DVD player.

You could make a tidier set up by simply having just one connection between the HDR and the TV, and laeve the TV permanently on the Video input connected to the HDR, you then change "channels" by altering the inputs on the HDR-

Given that neither the TV or the HDR have tuners capable of decoding the satellite frequency, you probably aren't missing much not having the Sat feed connected all the way through.

Good point, just have one box to the TV and one box permanently to the DVR.
This means you're gearing the DVR/HDD recorder and the TV eachup with a tuner that works with the satellite signals.

Yes the DVR HDD will only accept inputs from a STB (not direct from the antenna), I am using it to record and for time-shift viewing.

STB-A is connected to both the recorder and the TV so that I can see what is being recorded, on the DVR while viewing the channel, and for setting up, etc. If I don't wish to view this channel, then I use the output from the STB-B for viewing.

I initially had a Hills HSM075 STB (single tuner) but wanted to record and view on two different channels.

Splurging out on a new dual-channel receiver wasn't an option. The second STB (B) is an UltraPlus 700HDMI PVR.

Put a USB drive on the U/P 700 and you can record direct off that.

Err, given that you have a receiver that with the addition of a $100 USB HDD will give you the ability to programme recording via a 8 day epg, (rather than having to cordinate getting the right channel on the EPG and then scheduling a timer record event on you DVR) why don't you simply run both boxes straight to the TV??

Use one to record what ever you want (on board) and the other to watch to other channel ( of course if you wanted to you could slave the HDD recorder onto the lesser of the two STB and record both channels at the same time.

That's what I thought I was doing.

Both STB's connect to the TV.

Only one connects to the HDD DVR. The STB's allow me to view Channel A and/or Channel B at the same time. Channel A can be viewed direct and/or recorded on the DVR HDD using STB-A. If being recorded, I can also time-shift this channel.

The second STB permits viewing only on the TV if I wish to view a second channel (Channel B) while recording on the HDD DVR. Neither of the STB's have storage for time-shifting.

Hi All

Thanks for the input. I am slowly learning.

Lat night I was able to record through STB-A (Hills HSM075) to the recorder (Pioneer DVR-520H-S) and timeshift playback during the recorded rugby match after watching another channel through an UltraPlus 700HDMI PVR (STB-B) using the HDMI cable to the TV.

My enquiry to this forum relates to missing functionality of the UltraPlus. As you may note from the original post, I am using the Hills STB to view and also to record to the Pioneer.

The UltraPlus is used for the main viewing only. For some reason (s) I am unable to work out how to organise the UltraPlus for recording or timeshifting if I should have it connected to the Pioneer instead of the Hills.

I am not sure as to setting up of the service channels (changing of the sequences in the service lists) as they appear to be out of order. How do I get Teletext? What is CAS service? How do I change the listing ID/seuqences of the service list.

There are a number of questions that are not explained very well in the UltraPlus user's manual.

Is there a better user guide that explains things better for a newbie (dunce)?

The PVR part of the Ultra plus is designed to have a USB Hard Drive attached to record on.

Thus eliminating the need for the Pioneer Recorder.

My HDD is the Pioneer;- and the connectors between the UltraPlus (STB-B), the Hills (STB-A), the Pioneer, and the connections to the TV are those that I had available without having to spend any more. My wife won't let me.

I do have 3 RBG(?) component leads available but no suitable sockets.

Does this help to give you an idea of the setup.

Even though the UltraPlus is directly connected to the TV I don't get Teletext as I should.

Is there a user guide other than the one that comes in the box?

I find it intriguing that the UltraPlus decoder should list that it supports Teletext and indicates that the HDMI can be connected to a digital TV.

Really? I'll try that on my box tonight.
You need to be on a TVNZ channel like TV1 first often though.

What everyone is saying is, if you get a USB hard drive, even a 4 or 8gb usb thumb drive to start with, you can plug it into that usb port on the front of the ultraplus unit. You can record onto this directly, without having to use the hard drive recorder unit at all. The files are then on the usb hard drive and you can play them back etc from within the ultraplus set top box. You can book them to record off the EPG too etc.

But yeah, if you want to watch one channel and record another then you'll need two tuners, made up here by one tuner in each set top box device.
