Ok i'm a total newbie to all of this so i apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge.

I bought an old 80cm sky dish with sharp LNB to hook up to my digitview satellite receiver. I have spent 3 days with my father trying to troubleshoot why we are only getting 1% quality signal. we get around 60-70% signal intensity so we assume the dish and cables are ok. (we used a satellite finder when installing the dish and seem to have it in the correct position?)

Anyway last night i was playing around with the LNB and transponder frequencies and found a locked channel with 80-90% quality. I assume this is a sky frequency as i cannot view it.

I have tried transponder frequencies 12483 and 12456 with 22500S/R and Horizontal with 18v power but no luck with freeview. The LNB type is set to standard (i have tried L/O 11300 and 10750), 22KHz is off, DisQue off and no luck. I have used the receiver in our old house so i know it works with freeview.

I hope this makes sense to you guys and hopefully you can offer a tip as to why this is happening?

You might be on the wrong satellite.

Do a scan of Optus D2 or Optus C1 and see if you get any channels. They are all very close and it's very hard to tell with a basic squarking satellite finder.

You've spent 3 days doing this?
Get a professional satellite installer in to do the work... that's 2.5 days too long in my book. You should be watching TV, not looking at satellite tuner boxes.

My satellites are pre programmed into the reciever, any idea of the settings for freeview or c1 satellite? maybe i can figure out how to manualy enter new satellite.

And i know i probably should get someone else to do it, but hey im stubborn and want to learn to do it myself . Plus i live in a really remote area and dont want to spend a huge amount of money

If the receiver is pre setup for freeview then I would do this:

1) make sure the lnb settings are entered correctly.
- Search anywhere here for the settings, but basically 10750 for a 'sky' oval lnb or 11300 for a round one, 22kHz tone off, diseq off etc. don't use any splitters etc either.

1b) make sue the lnb is correctly aligned on the dish, ie the right rotation angle.

2) turn the receiver to TV1 or TV3 etc, just a pick a channel.

3) go up on the roof and move the dish by hand until you get some hint of a picture.
- use www.dishpointer.com to help you align it.

4) If you get a picture then you're on the right satellite and if you want you can then connect the squarky satellite finder to help you optimise the left/right/up/down angles better.

sorry, but if you get this far and still haven't got it working then you should value your own personal time more and get a pro in.

I think the key here is that it is not a matter of you learning but more you just don't have the equipment. A pro will have the right gear which means that can tell what sat they are getting a signal from. You on the other hand cannot. Try the above suggestion but if you don't have any luck after a few minutes I would just flag it and get a pro in. Then be discouraged when he has it done in 5mins flat ;-)

Thanks for the help guys, but i finally got it working! It turns out the problem was the channels on the receiver were configured to the wrong transponder frequency, so i was searching for satellites which didn't exist

Once i figured that out i just found the channel with the right frequency, got up on the roof with the squealer and found the right positioning and bingo! My money can stay in my pocket!
