I have just installed UHF receiver in Invercargill & can't get Teletex is it available else where in NZ I understand

it is available on Satillite

I don't see anywhere that claims the Magic TV supports Teletext, and the only reference to it says it doesn't.

Are you on the TVNZ MUX? The Media Works and Kordia MUX's don't carry Teletext (which is actually being dumped as a service anyway during ASO)

I have an old analog CRT TV (refuse to get a new one until this one dies!) and I get the weather forecast from teletext daily.

TVNZ probably won't be a lot of help. Your first point of call should be the Magic TV support to establish whether the Magic TV actually supports Teletext. There is certainly no reference to it anywhere on their website or the manual which indicates it probably doesn't.

How have you connected the Magic TV to the TV? Many STB's that do support Teletext don't support it via HDMI, only composite or component.

I don't know why you're bothering with this since they announced two years back that Teletext was being switched off by 2012.

The text key on the Magic tv remote is for the digitext service - the replacement for teletext, but I don't know of any implementation plans

The Magic tv 3600 (3700 too?) unit passes the teletext signal on to the tv via the composite video connection, so then you just use the tv teletext keys to view it. Only TVNZ channels + Trackside transmit teletext on the Freeview terrestrial service and I presume the same on satellite.

That is interesting, because I don't think it has been that widely reported by the media. It also contracdicts what is on the freeview goingigital website which doesn't mention it will be switched off shortly. It specifically says teletext will continue to be avaliable after the digital switchover, which appears to be incorrect information. I can only assume they also didn't know this.

Does digital television help people who are hard-of-hearing or visually impaired?

I can see this being a problem, because you will have a lot of people including the elderly who still use it, and what then replaces it? I guess the internet, but many elderly don't use the internet.

Last I heard (around 18 months ago), the plan was for DigiText to launch as a replacement for Teletext after ASO. This would be a MHEG5 based replacement. I have no idea of this is still the plan.
