Anyone know if there's a way to have a couple of units and separate their remote controls - or selectively control them with a Harmony remote?

Other recorders I've had enable channel selection choice for their remotes.

While the MTV3600 only has one remote setting, the MTV3700 has three different remote settings. That unit can be set up to be controlled by:

MagicTV remote
Windows Media Centre remote
Xbox 360 remote.

If you have a harmony, you will be able to load all the above remotes and control a single MTV3600 and an additional 2 MTV3700's.  NOTE that the MagicTV remote controls both the MTV3600 and the MTV3700.

But the 3700 doesn't enable jump forward in 1min steps or transfer of unencrypted video files via ethernet to and from your pc.
Without these superior features, who would want one?

Good question. I like my MTV3600 with modded firmware and upgraded HDD.  I went down the path of getting a MagicTV (MTV3600) and a Panasonic DMR-BW850 (Blu-Ray/HDD Recorder) so I could easily get recordings off both units, and have the 1 minute jump forward.

Mind you, it was not until about 1.5 years after I purchased the MagicTV that the hacked firmware was available.

My TiVo is acting up and if I can't resurrect it then I was considering purchasing a second MTV3600 as a replacement, when the remote problem occurred to me.

I'm now considering a DMR BW8xx but the price is rather outrageous.

One thing to consider, get the MTV3700 and then make sure that anything you might want to keep, you record on the MTV3600, and make do with the Fast Forward rather than the 1 min skip.  When I originally got the MTV3600, this is what I did. There was no 1 min skip on the MagicTV, and anything I wanted to keep, I recorded on the Panasonic and then burnt it to Blu-Ray. Now with the modded MagicTV firmware, I am spoilt for choice.

In a year or so, someone else may have modded the MTV3700 firmware and you may then get all the extra features.  At the moment, it is just too new on the market for that.

Probably pretty good advice, especially given that I have a Panny BR player and a BluRay writer in my pc.

My first PVR was a Zinwell in Dec08 and then I got the TiVo in July09.

I'm still disappointed with the 3700 for encrypting HD files and locking them to the hardware. Does it do this on all recordings or only to those on an external USB drive, do you know?

Anyway, I'm going to swap out the HDD in the TiVo today, to see if that achieves anything.

I do not know if the recordings on the internal HDD are encrypted.  The 3700 manual states:

Attaching External Hard Disk Drives

External HDDs can be used to seamlessly expand storage
space or to export recordings for other Magic TV™ users
to view.

Recordings made on a New Zealand Magic TV™
MTV3700TD unit are encrypted and can only play on the
unit which originally made the recordings.

It may only be referring to the external HDD, but until someone pulls out the HDD and checks the contents, we wont know for sure.
