Sorry this is a bit off topic, apart from it's the audio amp used with the television and Sat receiver. I couldn't think of where else and it's a strange problem someone here may have an idea about?

Woke up about 4am the other morning to what sounded like a truck outside. After a long time, got up to have a look and as soon as i put the light on, it stopped.

Then last night it happened again... but I traced it to the hifi where a loud hum and buzz could be heard, from the speakers, surely? I leave the amp on all the time. Again, turned on a light - and it stopped.

Any thoughts?

What sort of lights do you have? I have a fluorescent here that crashes my Blu-ray player when I turn it on, and my brother reckons that's not uncommon!

Just normal incadescants... not the energy saving type. And each time it's happened it's been a different light. Wondered if maybe some ripple control signal starts it, but I can't figure the light business.. Is it any additional load? Next time will try switching on something else e.g. the oven. Bad luck with the Blu Ray.

Do you have any DRC (Dynamic Range Control) settings turned on at all?

I know my yamaha receiver starts making a humming sound if left for a while (usually only when my LP/record player is connected).
When I turn a light on, the arcing interference/static from the light switch usually puts a nice click through the speakers, and resets the DRC levels so that the resident humming sound from the record player goes away. I.e. the noise floor threshold of the DRC feature in the amp goes up.

I believe it's probably something to do with the not-so-stellar pre-amp circuitry in the record player that seems to constantly emit a 50Hz hum. This hum eventually gets amplified by my receiver to the point that it could well sound like a truck engine.

Thanks for the reply. It's a Technics amp, about 7 years old, and doesn't have DRC, afaik.
Guess I can only wait for the next time and try to analyse it a bit further!
