Dammit! Humble pie apologies for stretching the truth.
That's what comes of watching wide-screen tv for too long.

The key points if it fell off the end of your frame were:

1. The sat feed on one of the networks was lease only as a backup.
2. Apparently GTV-9 had moved operations at the beginning of the year to central Melbourne.
3. The new fibre feed to their transmission site has now been completed.
4. The satellite feed was costing SBS too much and the government is cost cutting.
5. SBS is now fibre fed to Tasmania from Melbourne with the ABC mux.
6. The lost sat feed is confirmed as permanent (it has disappeared on the odd occassion in the past).

Q1. What are the options if any and are there any alternative feeds?
Q2. Would a VAST receiver/card work here in NZ or are the location specific?

Pwned: Oh no... SBS 1 and 2 are my favorite channels on Freeview. Love all their shows. Dateline, Coast, European movies, football games, Luke Nguyen, and other cooking shows, and of course the world news. Awww. Gutted!

Luke Nguyen is on Choice TV tonight 8:30 to 9:00pm

That's just adding insult to injury.  Choice TV is not available from Optus D1.

I wonder if I did some deep scallop dredging between Aus and Tasmania, whether SBS would start up again :-)

Here's what I found today on www.stuff.co.nz

"Adding insult to Kiwi TV connoisseurs' injury is the recent closure of a satellite loophole which enabled us to watch the two SBS channels here via a correctly configured Freeview or Sky decoder.
SBS's availability here was not widely known but installers have been known to tune the station in and internet forums listed instructions for anyone keen to do a DIY job.

However Optus has shut off the signal from its D1 satellite which carries New Zealand's satellite frequencies."

Sorry. I forgot the most important part of the article:

"Considering the depth of content - lifestyle, documentary, sport - on SBS, it wouldn't be surprising if a New Zealand broadcaster had dropped a word to either SBS or Optus about their signal leakage across the Tasman."

Yeah their pleading ignorance is just a little suspicious in my opinion:

I just looked here <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Broadcasting_Service>. The un-encrypted SBS transmission ended on 8 May, instead the service is being offered by ground-based cable.

It was too good to last.

GeekGuy: World famous in New Zealand ... eh !

Only cos I hosted a website showing people how to decode SkyTV UHF back in the day and got myself in a little trouble with the powers. Luckily, nothing came of it and I lived happily ever after (even though my tutorial still lives online).

Cool

I'm now trying to figure a way that I can stream a STB (in Australia) with good compression via a linux box and Static IP to us here in NZ using some kind of script to create a torrent file. Just haven't figured out the best way.

Think AppleTV or the like.

Based on equipment costs, stability of Linus, cheap broadband and a desire to get SBS back, it must be possible. And I'm even happy to meet the costs.

Any thoughts? Any ideas? Any contacts? (I have one that could/would host a box in Oz)(I hope).

Kim DotCom?

Lets hope I don't get "famous" again.

Hi

Following on from info given earlier in this thread, I sent a email to jayx.co.nz about other satellite fed options to receive SBS; explaining that I lived in Central Otago and was receiving SBS on my Sky dish until SBS disabled it.

They came back with the following info (below) which seemed to suggest I could use my existing sky dish but with a new satellite rx.

**********
"> Good morning,
>
> If your sky dish has either of these lnbf's (dual) then the primary is fixed on
> Optus D1 and the offset is fixed on Optus C1 .

> The switching s done by adding a 22Khz tone generated inside the satellite
> receiver .
>
> You do however require a satellite receiver which accepts a suitable smart
> card.
>
> There are two versions
>
> Ultraplus 900HD $445.00
> Ultra Plus 780 $305.00
>
>
> Regards

***********

I then asked:

**********
"Just to check I understand;  a SBS signal is available (to me) on Optus C1 but I will need (if I have the right lnb on my Sky dish) one of the UltraPlus RX below to pick it up - is this correct?
Also (if the above is correct), where do I get a suitable smart card for the Rx'ers - do you sell these as well?

Thanks"
***********

They replied:

**********

"Photo is a dual LNBF which will switch to  C1 when the 22KHz switch is selected at the receiver . both ultra plus options  will come tuned for all channels .
The regional’s are as per the chart .

Sorry, can't copy the chart above properly to this post, but what about the info they have supplied - seems to indicate that I can get SBS again with my existing sky dish using either of the Sat Rx (Ultraplus 900HD $445.00 or Ultra Plus 780 $305.00) and both rx'ers will come pre-tuned with the services in the chart above? Is this correct?

Thanks
