Most shows are filmed in 1080i so I suspect TV3 like many broadcasters are choosing to simply retransmit that rather than investing in an expensive deinterlacer. The fact that virtually all TV's sold these days are flat panels which are a progressive scan screen and not an interlaced picture like a CRT - interlaced video formats should be made obsolete by now!

Actually IIRC most US network shows if shot digitally in HD are shot in 1080p. They are then downconverted for transmission. That means when they do a BR or HD-DVD release they can issue it in 1080P. Also many are still shot on film, whether Super15 or 35mm and you can scan whatever format you want from that medium.

Given the US networks use both 1080i and 720P (from memory ABC, ESPN and Fox are 720p) while CBS and NBC are 1080i, I would guess TV3 could get whatever format they want to broadcast.

Yeah this would be awesome, basically I am a cheapskate who doesn't want to spend anymore than they have to. I am looking for free codecs etc (I am forever hopeful). And yes fossie its me, the guy who frequently annoys you on msn.

One can only hope that is a mistake similar to the title.
But thumbs up for TV3 12 hours a week is basically all their prime time US shows.

Pity that no one will be able to aford the hardware to watch it..

Why do you keep knocking the launch of the service and the price of the boxes?

Because unlike you I consider $599 way too expensive for a STB!!

$500+ for a STB for Freeview is an outright ripoff IMHO. If they expect to get good takeup then they are living in a dream world. Perhaps TVNZ realise that so are just playing a waiting game. And if they expect the Olympics to help drive HD adoptions they have a big think coming. While the Olympics are interesting, given the record of NZ'ers in it (this isn't after all the World Cup Rugby) I think I could say without too much contradiction, that the sale of a $500 STB are not exactly going to spiral up because of that event.

Would you pay $500 for a HD STB or perhaps $799 for HD player (say PS3?)

General guide or specific for NZ DVB-T?

There is plenty of documentation for mediaportal at their site and plenty of support in the forums (Come join us in the NZ thread). Apart from the HE-AAC (which is supported is by mediaportal (codec bundled)) there isn't really anything unique about using MP in NZ.

I'll look at doing a TVServer write up for DVB-T, was going to wait til TVE3 was final though (if you can all wait til the weekend I'll make one with the new SVN's and the NSIS installer as this will make dealin with SVN's a lot better than currently with the MSI installer)

I found this interesting

Mr Allen said surround sound would be introduced in a few months. "On day one we'll still be in stereo sound. Audio is one of the more difficult things to master."

Intetresting comment about the audio. I would have thought that if the program came with DD5.1 then thats what you sent to air. How difficult is that unless you don'y have any DD 5.1 hardware only DD with Prologic..

Prison Break? I'm sure that finished after season one didn't it? Whoops.. O/T..

Side note, got an AverMedia AverTV DVB-T Volar USB tuner. Runs perfectly well under Vista, and in combination with DvbViewer, picks up all the channels from Sugarloaf. As an added bonus, the rubbish TV software that came with the tuner has it's own h.264 codec. I am only using the crappy aerial that came with it so there is a bit of breakup, but even so I almost wet my pants when I saw the 1080 test feed. Now to get Media Portal working with it..

I can't brain today. I have the dumb.

The Kordia Mux in Dunedin is now showing National Radio and Concert Radio. Also the local 'tvCentral'.

Maybe because they have chosen to use HE-AAC LATM for audio so even if the original were encoded in DD, they would have to transcode for broadcast. Just guessing
