batman222: I was immediately concerned when a prominent Auckland online retailer posted a newsletter devoted to the virtues of the channels.
That thought crossed my mind too....

SBS epg is coming thru correctly, so it's not buffered.   My box shows reasonable signal strength but zero quality.   Maybe bad weather across the ditch?

Well there was a big low circling Tasmania, specifically states Tazzy on the weather (TV3). Could be the problem??

No SBS on D1 but you can still get SBS on C1 if you have an Aurora card (no HD).

Anyone know about the VAST system in Oz? I don't know much, but is it possible that SBS is now only using this to provide satellite coverage?

What I find odd is that I can't find any announcement of a reconfiguration being needed by a particular date (say for a transponder change to a different beam), or complaint from Tasmanian viewers about a service loss, and I can't understand how they could still be up and running while we are blacked out.

If they are gone for good, all I can say is a profound thanks to SBS for providing their poor cousins with some outstanding FTA TV, even if that was not their intention. Their two channels offered a greater variety of meaningful content than the whole gaggle of channels serving up ad-ravaged pap (and ad-ravaged pap PLUS 1) from the Freeview platform partners here.

If a country of 22M people can provide two such channels, could not a country of 4.4M just about manage at least one half-decent one?

Same problem with SBS on Optus D1 (Wellington).
SBS SE, SBS Qld, SBS WA still OK on Optus C1 Aurora (for another 18 months at best).

73% AGC in the Far North on 12648V / 12600, but 0% SNR.  It's as though the carrier is still there, but no modulation.  The EPG continues to function.  Truly strange!

Looks like Astrill will be getting hammered each week when Coast is on...

I believe the VAST beam cannot be accessed in NZ.

SBS are better than any of the NZ broadcasters, but ABC are better again - with no adverts!
I'm bitterly disappointed that we've lost SBS 1  + 2, and Channel 9/Gem/Go!, and next month we'll lose NZ's best FTA channel (TVNZ7).

If we were in South East Asia we would be able to receive the "Australia Network" which is an overseas service from ABC. I did ask them if there was any chance of them broadcasting to NZ and received this reply
"Dear Mr Silverlake,

Australia Network is not available in New Zealand. We do not have the broadcast rights for any of the programming for New Zealand and as such cannot broadcast into your area.

Regards

Australia Network".
So NZ must be the worst place in the OECD for FTA TV.

Not sure whether to move to Australia or pay Rupert Murdoch?

Australia Network is easily picked up on Intelsat5 in NZ. Unfortunately it's 4:3 so I don't watch it much. SBS Tasmania was only on the NANZ beam because of a lack of capacity on the NA and NB Australian beams. Choice TV has some of the programs they showed. Will miss the Tour de France...

Silverlake,

They mightn't make a big deal about it, but you can definitely get Australia Network. I get it on Intelsat 5 with a 1.2m petal dish on my roof. It also gives me BBC News. No EPG, but clear signals, and good audio. Last night there was a new one too NRLtville (on both Intelsat 5 and again on Intelsat 8) showing a Cowboys game. It had good audio, but I couldn't get the video properly. It was all blocky, like it was a weak signal, except it wasn't a weak signal. Anyone know why I couldn't decode the video? I don't have MPEG-4 on my receiver, but normally the video is black for MPEG-4 channels and I still get the audio for them.

Oh and there's plenty of people on GeekZone saying they get it on a 90cm dish.

VAST wasn't meant to be part of the digital switchover for Tassie until "1st half 2013". So this does seem premature. Their website says "For complaints or enquiries regarding SBS transmission and reception please ring 1800 500 727 during business hours." - I suggest one of us, not every New Zealander rings that number, and tells GeekZone what's going on, except it's a 1800 number, so I think we need someone in Australia to ring them on our behalf and find what's out going on. Any GeekZoners currently in Oz able to do so for us Monday morning?

Fingers crossed SBS is back by tonight.

And just for interests sake last night the atmosphere was so clear I could get better signals on my Asiasat3 dish than I've ever seen before. (I could also see Mount Taranaki from Mangaone, just east of Shannon too, so that means the air was pretty clear) I got to see Phoenix InfoNews, Xing Kong and Channel V at times with no artifacts which I've never been able to see at all before. See http://extra-channels.com/2012/04/25/asiasat-3s-with-a-too-small-dish/
