"Nine Network 3D Olympic Trial
Operating dates: 16th July 2012 ? 13th August 2012

Where is the trial being broadcast?
The 3D trial broadcast will be available in Sydney Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and on the Gold Coast. Please note that the trial is being operated with reduced transmission power and with no in-fill translators, so some viewers may be unable to receive the signal.

What programs will be available?
The Nine Network has announced live 3D and highlights coverage of the Olympic telecast, as follows:

* Daily from 11am until 3.30pm/4pm beginning on the 29th of July
In between this coverage, a mix of 3D demonstration material will be provided."

My guess is that from reading the above, that when the real broadcast starts, They will drop this service into NZ because we are not included within their broadcast rights.

Oblivian: Also needs to be a 3d Passing capable receiver.

The Receiver just needs to be a full HD DVB-S2 decoder because its the TV that handles the 3D.

Yeah, from what I can gather it's a side by side picture being broadcast in HD, so you'll need a receiver that can decode that, rather than a '3D specific receiver'.

As has been mentioned above, you just set the 3D TV to side by side 3D input and it will do the rest, or go cross-eyed etc...

Fundamentally though, wouldn't this  equate to maybe even less than SD in the end?  Given the eventual full frame of the shot will be constructed from images of only half the HD screen resolution?

Yes, apsattv.com News section for 23/07/12 says:

"The 3d Test on D1 has changed SR to 11200, service has been changed so that the 3D Channels no longer load...."

It was fun while it lasted.

Quoted from my nzdtv post:

Rate has changed to 11.2 MBd and the mux is now carrying the feed in only one PID of 7424 0x1D00 making most STBs unable to process it. ie, you would need a PeeCee to pipe the stream through to a player like mplayer. I assume they did this to stop us from trying to view it in NZ. ie, Sky may have complained to them.

You could use a modified enigma2 box like a dreambox, openbox, etc to do this as well.

Also full tech details on the transport stream within a transport stream for
12.65 GHz @ 11.2 MBd on vertical polarization modulated with QPSK 3/4:

According to the Network ID of 12803 this is a distribution path uplinked from WIN Nine's Perth station
for translation to Australian system B UHF channels @ 578.5, 550.5, 599.5, 683.5 MHz

HD SBS 3D service 1277 (channel 95 - program map at 256, timing at 128)
H.264 High@L4.0 11 Mbps 1920x1080i 25 fps video at 512
Dolby 5.1 48 kHz 384 kbps audio transport selected at 660
WARNING - no DVB 3D component descriptor is set in the SDT or EIT, manual activation of 3D mode may be required.
ie, you only need a 3D TV like the LGE ones that have a manual mode option.

SD FHA 2D Test service 1278 (channel 96 - program map at 257, timing at 129)
H.262 Main@Main 1.5 Mbps 720x576i 25 fps video at 513
MPEG stereo 48 kHz 96kbps audio transport selected at 661
