Hi, that card has an S-video input, which considering you are using a standard def feed on a basic sky box is probably as good as you need. Standard Sky boxs support S-Video

Edit: I see VLC server support quite a good server side set of functionality including mutilcasting which is what you would be looking at, definitely the way to go. Recommend you give the server a decent dash of horse power I suggest.

Just need to also check that your switches support multicast (if you decide to use that) the MoE standard for switches you should be purchasing specs multicast as a requirement, even the most basic AT-8000S models we supply support multicast in all its options.

Hmm, so no Media Portal.

There are other options though, like as others have said, VLC, or possibly GBPVR.

I will get in touch with the technicians tomorrow and find out if our switching is up to it.

One draw back is our server is leased so we will be adding components to a computer the school doesn't own. But, meh we will just pull it back out before the lease is up.

All of the teachers have laptops which connect to the projectors in the rooms so that isn't an issue.

A positive for VLC is that it is already included in our images for staff laptops, so no time needs to be spent installing it.

The school spends loads of $ on sports equipment, and the beauty of MySky is we can record the significant events and play it when suits. Plus, getting this system in place prepares up for future if we want to run an in school TV channel to broadcast notices, share learning, etc.

Does MySky+ have S-Video?

Hi, yes MySky has S-Video, both on SCART (as do the standard boxs) and on a mini Din. As for the server, can you not just install it in an decently power desktop that you do own.

Any options via iSKY web version? Does that support multiple connections on the same Sky TV account.

As above though, could you not look to get coverage off freeview options, given the time difference will mean all school time viewing will be replays/highlights etc?

That's because you want something with a hardware Analogue MPEG2 decoder. If you buy a cheap card without this you'll get lacking software support and require software encoding which takes up resource, and is generally not as ideal.
A better quality card will have hardware mpeg2 analogue encoding and give a better experience software wise - in fact i think that you can actually have VLC hook directly into its DVB feed perhaps? not sure.

VLC is a good idea as a simple solution. I'd probably multicast it if possible, assuming the schools network would support this, because it would be the most efficient on bandwidth, otherwise you'll congest the schools network if a whole bunch of classrooms connect to the streaming server.

$3000 was really a stab in the dark as to budget in actual fact i will probably be given about $1000 to get this working. This is not just the olympics this is having the ability to watch recorded documentaries in classrooms indefinitely. As well as being able to have an internal TV channel for kids to share learning with the rest of the school.

iSky is a no go, the school does not have the bandwidth to watch youtube in a reliable way so scratch any on demand TV.

All of the computers in the school are leased not owned unfortunately

Fair enough. When I was at school and the Olympics were on It was pretty simple. We held our own playground olympics. Some students were lucky and their teacher bought their home tv in each day so they could watch it.

Hi again,

1) There are USB AV capture products available if you have an issue opening up your server to install items.

2) If you have traffic issues, run a separate subnet for a/v traffic. Check if your switch supports VLANs or get a separate hub.

That's really sounding more like you want a central server where content is loaded and clients out in the field that pull from the central unit.

On the subject of SKY, is there really a need for this over free to air content during the Olympics?

Is someone able to confirm,

Can the Colossus be used for live streaming?

Either through media portal Or VLC?

Tried it using media portal. Dies every 15 minutes and requires reboot so I gave up.
