mattwnz: The other thing you could try is recording the show after it too, so you can watch the end of the first one.

Yep, thought of that, BUT - Samsung strike here too - you can't playback (or even change channel) whilst it is recording. I haven't tried it, but I wouldn't be surprised to find the recording stops (prematurily) then begins again for the next show a minute or too later - still cutting off the wanted programme early. I have that kind of luck!

Anyway, MySky is due to be installed tomorrow, and I have high hopes for that.

BTW, Apart from these recording issues, I quite like the TV. The thin bezel surround, and good picture quality are in it's favor. I didn't buy it initially with recording in mind - just a pity that this feature is so poorly implemented.

Hiamie:
PimpMyMagic:  All the decent recorders do this.

Sadly, it seems that Samsung is not one of these. Maybe in a future firmware update - but i wont hold my breath!

I think everyone has missed that you are in fact just talking about a TV that has the ability to record to a HDD, not a seperate decoder/PVR. It's really just an extra 'feature' rather than a core component of the TV.

Because it is just a TV, with only a single tuner, it's not designed to allow you to record one channel while watching another... that's what PVRs are for.  In reality this implementation is more just a 'Live Pause' type of thing rather than a full-blown recorder/PVR.

IMO you're expecting a lot of capability from the TV (multiple tuners and in-built HDDs may come sometime in the future)

If you want full-on PVR capability then buy a proper PVR or, as you have already done, get MySky.

You could try emailing Samsung and Freeview in the same email.  I did this for a JC Matthews box I had that did just plain stupid stuff, like recording an event up to Lotto but not continuing after Lotto etc.  I had Freeview up about it because they approved the unit and the unit had their logo splashed across the front panel and the advertising etc.

If Freeview want to position themselves as they have, and insist on a common interface such as their MHEG5 EPG (not broadcasting EIT data so companies can do what they want with this info) then they should take some interest in crap products with their branding on it.

OT, did you ever make any progress with this problem on your JC Matthews box?

If it says it can do it on the box then no one's being over the top expecting that function to work.

Yes it has only got one tuner, but if you book a program to record via the freeview EPG, it's not unrealistic to expect it to record all of it.

Yes, I made huge progress.  I now have a TIVO instead.
