my question (which is probably very common and asked way to much)

when will more channels be made available in HD and also on the DVB-S2 service?

currently sky provide TV1, 2, 3 in HD via DVB-S2 but it is encrypted, and not easily viewable.

Prime isnt in HD, I don't believe channel 4 is in HD.

My question to Freeview, and obliquely to Mauricio, is whether there'll be any prospect of HDTV over DVB-S. I'm not in a DVB-T coverage area, and would love to have HDTV available to me.

Mauricio--*if* I were to win this prize, would you make it a DVB-S compatible DVR box ;) ?

The success of Freeview will depend on having more channels and a greater variety of channels being available. My question is what are Freeview doing to get more Freeview channels on air? I presume Freeview are not just waiting for potential broadcasters to contact them but are actively pursuing new customers and new opportunities. How does Freeview plan to increase their presence in the TV market?

Hi Freeview

Would like to know why you use and if you ever plan to stop using the HE-AAC audio codec in your Freeview HD/UHF/Terrestrial service. Many channels now carry an AC3 track which seems to be more universally compatible, why not just use that?

Is freeview investigating launching their own channels to fill any gaps in the market. I think there are already enough channels, but the quality of the programming isn't there. Basically NZ is let down by it's news, business news, investigative journalism, documentary and technology news services.

How about setting up some form of central ondemand online service that includes all the channels that are broadcast on the freeview platform, and having this available as an app on smart tvs/ipads etc. Currently the ondemand services are only provided by a few channels, and are disjointed with varying formats and quality.

Once I get UFB to my home, I won't need an aerial, dish, set-top box, or TV. Right? I can just watch Freeview over IP?

Hope that's right - never got around to buying any of that stuff.

Also, there were reports, but do freeview actually have HD versions of their EPG ready to go?

Given that the content is free to air, could the EPG be made freely accessible too?
Could it be published in a standard form (say XML) from a central location for Kiwis to use in their DIY setups?

The DTH service seriously oversubscribed due to the multiple versions of TV One and TV 3. What progress is being made on acquiring additional capacity, or providing guidance to broadcasters around picture quality.

Further to this question, and as noted by other contributors, the picture quality of detailed fast moving scenes (particularly ball sports) is frequently dreadful due to compression and pixelation on the DVB-S platform.

I understand the individual broadcasters wanting (needing?) to provide regional streams, however these multiple streams appear to be at the expense of picture quality across all channels due to the limited bandwidth available. I understand there is a technology (name escapes me, but dynamic changing of vpids or similar concept) that would enable the broadcast of a single program stream, and only having to broadcast multiple regional streams for the parts of the broadcast that vary between regions (presumably advertising the obvious one).

Has consideration been given to implementing this, or a similar solution to reduce bandwidth needs and increase picture quality?

I've noticed there are now some "Energy Efficient Freeview Products". Do PVR products with this tick only do their initial hard drive spin up at the time when first required, or whenever they come out of standby?

There has been talk about Freeview launching interactive "on demand" services through IPTV. With the limitations of internet bandwidth in New Zealand constraining "broadcast" quality on existing IPTV services like Quickflix, can we expect to see such a service also support HEVC (the successor to MPEG-4) which reduces bandwidth consumption by 50% ?

Is the Panasonic DMR-BWT720 Freeview approved? It isn't on the Freeview website's list.

A number of Freeview approved PVRs like the Homecast, Zinwell, JCMatthew and to a lesser extent the Magic TV have suffered from either slow downs or rebooting problems after the stations made changes to their broadcasts. With brands coming and going and stations periodically making changes to their broadcasts, can we have the assurance that a Freeview UHF certified device like a PVR will remain compatible with broadcasts in the long term?
