JimmyH:
old3eyes: Wouldn't it be better to just have one news reader and a half hour program.. This Tweedledee and Tweedledum approach is a complete waist of money..

The news is already less than a half-hour program! the trouble is, without a PVR, it takes an hour to watch it.

The slot is 60 minutes.

Subtract:

  • 17 minutes (for commercial breaks)
  • 4 minutes for the cute carefully scripted adlibs between presenters
  • 1 minute for the cute carefully scripted adlibs between presenters and the weather presenter
  • 2 minutes for the weather forecast in the Pacific islands and Australia (which is pointless), and the banal shot of somewhere in NZ
  • 3-4 minutes for the "community busy-body" item at the end: "Jim has been picking up leaves outside local schools for 27 years......."
  • 4-5 minutes for soft "news" coverage on Obama's cat, Kate Middleton's new dress, Algy the claustrophobic budgie, or whatever "human interest" pap they can come up with to pad the program
  • 1 minute for the intro music and closing credits

And you are left with a news of around 26-28 minutes. Subtract another 12 minutes if you don't regard the sports roundup as regular news, and that leaves 14-16 minutes of actual hard news. All carefully crammed into 60 minutes, and needing three presenters to share the hard work.

And that's - drum roll- why I tend to read things online, read the paper, or listen to morning report.

Exactly why I use our Panasonic recorder to record TV3 news every night, and watch it later in the evening.
Using the play speed of 1.3x, we get through the entire news (with sports & weather) in about 25 minutes, not wasting time listening to all the extra dribble, and the presenters .... talking .... soo .... slow .... 1.3x play speed is great :)

In fact we don't watch much live TV anymore, almost everything goes through the freeview recorder, to skip ads and other annoying content.

As this thread is well and truly derailed...

Why don't TV companies give viewers the courtesy of showing the full end credits ?

I hate TV3's noxious habit of running the previous show's credits under the following show.

Simpsons is coming back to TV3 in HD !!!

TV3 news, Campbell Live, Nightline, Firstline etc studio lighting is still looking crap !

Haven't seen it, but not sure how it could have gotten worse. Its been overly green for years. Either the lights they were using were too green, or there was spill from the green screens (or both).
If you never noticed how green everyone has looked for years and find it too red now, then it sounds like your TV could do with a calibration.

Set is fine.

Definitely something funky is going on in their Ak studio as non-studio video looks fine as do their crosses out of Ak studios eg, the other night when they had John Campbell in Ak, Stephen Joyce in Welly, split -screen.

McRoberts et al are looking much better tonight.

Did someone at TV3 also notice how bad their video was looking ?

Do they do this so they can fit in more adverts? All channels seem to be doing this sort of thing now.

I remember a few years ago one of the TV presenters on TV1 was censured by her corporate masters for calling One Nooz "fluff".

Truth hurts eh?

Anyone remember Ian Fraser's exact quote when he said NZ TV was braindead ?

I know what you mean it is a pain when 1/2 of the show you are trying to watch is cut of and 10 min in you realize the stuff they showed at the start was 24hrs earlier or something but TV3 covered it with credits.

it also bugs me when in the news they cut to a reporter live outside on a noisy corner. and you cant hear a word they are saying because of the background noise. but all they are there for is to do a pre-roll for a pre-recorded clip.

I've always thought that was strange how they squished the credits up small so they could advertise something else.  I would have thought the production companies would complain about that practice as the people aren't getting their due credit.  If my name was in the credits I'd sure be annoyed!

They've been doing that in the USA for a while, so it's just TV3 imitating. Some programs even come with a version of the credits specifically tailored to being squished.

I've downloaded lost of US programs recently .  No squished credits or voiceovers. Who knows  how they are being captured..
