the AFL app looks interesting. although seems quite expensive. $90 for the season. although if you are an AFL fan but dont care much about other sports it is a hell of a lot cheaper than getting Sky

Quote from the article:

"The AFL wishes to thank the ongoing support of incumbent rights holder SKY and also welcome Sommet Sports as a new AFL broadcast partner for season 2013"

Looks like Sky are doing a Microsoft and supporting their competitor to avoid the heavy hand of regulation. Here's hoping that Sommet does an Apple and makes them regret it!

Big question is where is the bandwidth coming from. Kordia mux is currently full with low bitrate channels that look bad enough without further compromises.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Quoting SommetSports on the closed thread on Sommet Sports (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=83&topicid=114965)
"Hi there. Sommet is very excited to bring 6 live games of AFL to NZ each week. We have a lot of other sport content to broadcast which will be announced in the coming weeks." That message posted 8th March.

Hi Sarah, and welcome to the forum. It has now been several weeks, and we are very close to the purported launch. Do you have any update?

Regards and good luck.

Interesting lack of publicity out there.. if it wasn't for this forum I wouldn't even know about them.

If they are starting their AFL coverage next weekend, there should be a test signal soon, right?

Yes, I would expect some activity on Channel 14 if the 18th is a real date.

I have the feeling that the "announcement" was made by the AFL for their purposes, and we have not heard an official announcement from Sommet that I am aware of. The closest was the single post on Geekzone (on 8-Mar-2013) that I quoted above.

There was a reference on the Freeview NZ Facebook page on March 25 that suggests it is not a vapour channel from Freeview NZ: "we'll let you know as soon as Sommet Sport has finalised the necessary agreements for broadcasting via Freeview and confirmed a launch date with us." So far they have not confirmed a launch date as far as I can see

Well, if they miss this weekend I guess the next target would be getting on air by ANZAC day for the Wellington game..

Over at http://freeviewforum.co.nz/forum/topics/can-any-one-help?xg_source=activity there is some indication of life. It seems that Sommet are replying to emails along the lines of "We are not launch today as we have had encountered a problem which has prevented this.  We are doing all we can to get on air as quickly as possible.  We are in the process of working out our launch date and once we have established this we will let you know which should be either tomorrow or Monday."
