NZ dvb-t on uk tv i'm not sure but the first posts asks about dvb-s also, and I can confirm that dvb-s in nz works on uk tv using uk sat equipment.  There where some doubts about the audio being incompatable prior to me arriving in nz.  Due to the fact that a lot of modern tv's now state that they are pal compatable and not just say g or I type.  If the person in post one already has a recent modern tv and is shipping other items out to nz then it would well be worth shipping the tv as to say paying $699 for a new tv.

Not really. Most TVs from anywhere in the world will work with input from external equipment such as Satellite STBs. They won't receive Freeview in NZ though so effectively they just become a video monitor. To receive Freeview in NZ the TV must be compatible.

Afaik any new TV from a major brand supports MPEG-4 H.264 decoding on DVB-T. If the set is older then maybe not..

How is a broadcast  PAL standard relevant when NZ now have no working PAL services. One relevant issue was that legacy UK DVB-T system used mpeg2 rather than H.264.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Wow this thread has spun out of control!

So my understanding is Older UK TVs used DVB-T with the Mpeg-2 container (SD) and newer TVs use DVB-T2 which is Mpeg-4 container and H.264 encoding (HD)

The confusion comes about as NZ uses DVB-T, but with mpeg4. I guess the question now being discussed is will UK DVB-T receives be able to decode the Mpeg4 (H264) data, given its never going to be seen in the UK?

Newer TVs must be backward compatible, i.e receive DVB-T2 and DVB-T, and therefore somewhere within them can decode Mpeg4... Just can they decode it off DVB-T...

Anyway, all this aside - if my original reply had been read correctly you would see I am going to buy a TV here! I was more wondering if my Play-tv hardware device would work here - because it needs to be shipped (albeit cheap as its small) and it would be sweet to record HD tv to my PS3..

Because they are DVB-T not DVB-T2 devices, they do naff all with HD in the UK. I was wondering if anyone could confirm if their play tv device records HD here?

I do wonder however if at some point DVB-T2 will come here, I assume its modulation scheme is advantageous (more channels/higher quality?)

As for TVs I know different models reach different markets, but I assume the play tv device was possibly the same world wide?

Lastly, Can anyone please recommend me a good place to buy a TV or a suitable model? (Online/Good guys/Dick Smith etc) I am ultimately looking for around 50" and not too expensive (probably plasma) if it is an LCD, please only recommend if its 100Hz+ as I will be using it for gaming and don't want ghosting (nor input lag..)

I've always found JB HiFi to cut a good deal. I usually haggle with them and win.

Cool thanks -will have a look in there! any recoomendations on either a plasma model (bright as possible - slightly sunny room!) or fast led (100hz/low input lag?)

Apsattv: Buy a samsung smart TV and you can region set it to the U.K and loadup your BBC iplayer and other apps. Via a cheap dns or vpn service.

Hey Apsattv, can you confirm which current samsung NZ models can be set to the UK region?  Considering buying a new set, and this would be ideal :-)

You will have to google that info. Or the samygo forum will probably list it?
