We're going off topic now. I appears that the 550 is the only thing that does what I need it to do. We certainly can't connect our computer to our TV because they are in different rooms and can't both fit in the lounge.
Expanding on Fred, you could buy a cheap as chips Sammy BD player with Smarthub. AppleTV3 is cheap, that has Netflix, WDTV is cheap that has Netflix. Every device seems to have Netflix!
OK, I really appreciate the input that you guys have offered, it has been quite helpful. The only downside of the 550 I can see is the lack of analogue audio output, which I believe I can get around with an adapter. It appears to be the only device that does all of the things that I want it to do. Yes I could do these things with a combination of other devices, but I have been researching this for a while and it appears that they either won't integrate as well into our current set up or wont end up being any cheaper.

You might be able to send the TV audio outputs into the stereo though, so that whatever audio input your TV is using always goes through the stereo at the same time. That's what I do at home.
That's what I'm going to do. The thing is that the TV only has digital audio out, and the stereo only has analogue. I need a converter. Don't worry guys, I have looked into this aspect of the affair thoroughly and know what I need to do. Thank you for your ongoing input though.
This device definitely does Netflix. There is even a dedicated Netflix button. The AV connections are HDMI out and digital audio coax according to my manual. (I didn't want to remove it from the rack). The digital audio could be connected to one of those DACs to convert to analogue stereo RCA sockets that can be had from the likes of Jaycar etc. Of course you will only get stereo or dolby pro-logic at best. There is now an update fo rthe DMR-PWT550GZ. Ver:1.19. Once it downloads and restarts, go to digital TV tuning under setup, at the bottom of list is the freeview plus on selection.
FYI. Just picked one up at JBHifi for $298 - plenty of stock, at least at their St Lukes, Auckland branch. I'd wasted my time first going to 2 Noel Leeming stores and both only had display or return stock. The NL sales guy said it was being run-out.
Did check with Panny first and they said "Our new 2016-2017 model line-up generally comes out around June - July - I believe there will be a replacement model for the PWT550 but we do not have any information for release at the moment." However, I wasn't prepared to wait that long and probably have to pay full price for the new model. For what I want it for, the current model is good enough.
