Only small thing is that there is no 'series link' type feature (just a repeated timer record) so when programs get moved 10-15 mins from their usual slot (as both TVNZ and Mediaworks seem to do regularly these days) you may miss the start or end of shows. This is easily solved however by putting big time buffers at either end (like 15-25 mins). You can do this easily because you can make overlapping recordings of channels on the same transponder using just one tuner. The second tuner can then be used to watch or record another transponder. Given that almost all Freeview channels are on just two transponders (except Four plus 1, Edge TV and Prime) this means you can watch and record just about anything at any time. I've actually had six things recording at once while watching another just to try it out!  

 

I have Openvix 3.2 on my Solo2.. and the new versions of Openvix.. have series link fixed..

UI is much much faster and cleaner than SkyTVs

 great machines,very reliable and great back up online. I'm not into Linux or computers at all, true they be a price point above some here but my parents have a older Duo and they cant do wrong, and play around with it, as it has a backup if they decide to change something and don't like it, or u could buy a the Solo2 here in NZ if you wanted a local supplier, i got 'mine of TM 2nd hand for half the cost,

Have been using mainly Dreambox Receivers for around 15 years now, 7020s, 800s, 8000s 7020HD etc.. and have also a Vu+Duo for the past 5 years.

Since Dream are no longer supporting OpenSource for any of there Receivers, ive found myself favouring Vu+.

Recently I have been looking at upgrading, possibly to the Vu+Duo2 or Solo4K.

Does anyone have any recommendation's other than our Friend Pete here in NZ, that we can obtain VU+ Receivers - outside Nz.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

but buy from a European country or UK as there are clone/counterfeit ones from China out there country not sure if World Of Satellite will ship to NZ or not.

I got my Solo2 about 3 years ago from a French supplier called BF Sat, via an Ebay auction. Looking at their website just now they still have the Solo2, but no Duo2 or Solo4k. Have a look at the UK Amazon or Ebay to find someone who'll ship to NZ.

We just picked up a Zygo S2000 DVB-S receiver from JB Hifi a couple of weeks back for about $260. Comes with a 500GB inbuilt HDD and honestly the best and easiest to use remote I have used on any freeview receiver. Even better than that, it is fast and responsive. Pushing buttons actually results in action on the receiver which I can't say about the last few freeview boxes I have used. I can't speak to longevity but it seems well made enough.

Are you on fibre (or HFC cable)? Vodafone TV is another option. It's not an option I'd pick for myself, but it does have some pros - $99 for the box, no rental if you're on certain Vodafone plans, (some) carrier support/a helpdesk, and (probably biggest plus) HD even in satellite only areas.

On the downside, the UI is a little sluggish, and some boxes seem to be full of defects.

As I say, not something I would have personally but I set one up for my non-technologically inclined mother and she seems to like it well enough.
