Hard to see from your picture , but looks like the balun is missing,

 

ie the part you connect the cable to.

isaiahp: Yeah all these problems do sound plausible but I'd rather not rush to get a new antenna until I've tested to see if this old one still works. Surely there has to be a way to connect a coaxial cable to the antenna?

 

 

 

Not if the recieving element is missing from it, which it looks like it is from that photo.

They are part of the recieving element on those antennas, the add on diplexers are only really for VHF and FM antennas, as at UHF frequancies its easier for them to integrate it.

See if you have any reputable TV aerial installers in your area. See if you can get a free quote to fix the existing aerial and wiring. A signal test will also be part of this equation.

 

 

$300 not including GST. He only looked at it for a few seconds and wanted to do a complete replacement. Thing is we already have sky working so its not an urgent concern

Yeah so far a balun seems like the way to go. I'm going to make a trip to Jaycar and buy a balun some cable and some F connectors to reconnect the cable. I'll let you know how I go

There will be nothing to connect the balun to on that antenna, that part is missing. Those antennas typically do not use a seperate balun, they are built into the recieving element which you probably do not have.

I haven't tried it yet but the baluns i was looking at have 2 leads on them that attach to the antenna. The Balun only costs $6 it's worth a shot

If this is the one you're looking at it's no good. It's an old 4:1 balun for 300 ohm VHF antennae. The UHF antenna should be 75 ohm and uses a 1:1 balun with f connector. And if the main element is missing there's nothing to connect to anyway.

There was another balun on the jaycar website but it seems to have been removed! Thanks for that information though but arent baluns able to attach to a vhf antenna. Ive been doing more research online and people have been able to attach the coaxial cord without buying any equipment but only using household items. So im sure there is a way to connect it without buying a new antenna.

I don't think so. In all the UHF antennae I have come across the main receiving element is riveted or bolted to a printed circuit board type balun with an f connector for the co-ax. It is contained in a reasonably weathertight box but even so deteriorates over time. In your picture the receiving element and box appear to be missing on the UHF antenna (top one) so there's nowhere to connect the co-ax without replacing that particular element. As far as I know you can't get a new element without buying a whole new antenna. The other type balun will probably attach OK to the VHF antennae (your lower antenna) but then that one is of no use for Freeview UHF and should be removed.
