I'm dreading a such a switchover. I am essentially the default technical support guy for an elderly relative who is in a reception shadow where they can't get UHF, and satellite is the only option. They still pine for plugging in their VHF aerial and don't understand why they can't and why "the Government won't let them".

I had enough of a job persuading them that they needed a decoder as well as a TV, two decoders for two rooms, and have to change channels on the decoder not the TV. I still get support calls at work when, for instance, they somehow switch the TV to another input and panic because they can't get a picture. I have (literally) drawn pictures of their remotes and labelled which buttons they have to press to do things.

Persuading them that they really do need new boxes because the old ones are obsolete (even through they are not "broken"), and then having to get them comfortable using them will be a *nightmare*.

The stupid part is they could switch tv1,2,3 and Prime to HD straight away. They are there already on Sky's t.p

It doesnt have to be officially via freeview, until they get enough legacy decoder out of the way

Apsattv: The stupid part is they...

Who do you mean by "they"? Sky control those broadcasts, and past experience clearly tells us they will not just turn the encryption off on those services. Money or equivalent will have to change hands for the encryption switch to be flicked off. I doubt MediaWorks are in a position to throw additional money at satellite broadcasting right now, and TVNZ may be in a similar boat. Other considerations also apply. For example, if the HD channels are broadcast from different transponders then it introduces further fragmentation into the groupings of channels that can be recorded simultaneously. Freeview, TVNZ and MediaWorks may all be reluctant to have that happen.

1,2,3 HD are all on the same Sky T.P

TVNZ should have the final say on whether their content is encrypted or not, whatever the platform.

Changes are going to be needed anyway, othewise one SKY t.p will need to stay in DVB-S for compatibilty to be accessed by Freeview users.

A  sensible move would be to start to simulcast the sd feed of Bravo +1 , The Edge , Prime alongside 1,2,3 HD on the same transponder.

Yes, I know. The second point in my previous reply was that TVNZ and MediaWorks may prefer a "transponder mapping" where all of their channels can be recorded simultaneously with a single tuner, as is the case now on both the satellite and terrestrial networks. That's quite advantageous, not something to be thrown away lightly.

Apsattv: TVNZ should have the final say on whether their content is encrypted or not, whatever the platform.

Nice thought, but in my opinion not realistic. Sky are paying for the significant transmission costs. As a result I'd imagine Sky would easily have the leverage to insist on either exclusivity (as they have now) or sharing the transmission costs. Hence the comment in my previous reply that money or equivalent would need to change hands for the encryption to be removed.

Apsattv: Changes are going to be needed anyway, othewise one SKY t.p will need to stay in DVB-S for compatibilty to be accessed by Freeview users.

I'm sure Sky and Freeview will negotiate a solution for this situation and the overall transition.

I don't think "the elderly" should be worried about something happening in 2021......

I don't mind the quality of satellite as it is, but I'd appreciate the upgrade when it comes.  The only real problem I had with it was during Wimbledon where occasionally I'd struggle to locate where the shot went.

I've seen complaints here in the past where people declare how it looks terrible and how television is dead anyway.  Of course, they also mention some huge television size, and how they stream with their internet connection which rural dwellers don't have access to.

Cloud spending continues to surge globally, but most organisations haven’t made the changes necessary to maximise the value and cost-efficiency benefits of their cloud investments. Download the whitepaper From Overspend to Advantage now.

I'm quite sure TVNZ could afford taking over the the cost of paying for 10-15mbits of bandwidth on Sky's transponder to have TV1 and 2 HD unencrypted.

A temp solution until other capacity becomes available on D1

Until they see that people are not watching because of SD trash then they have no reason to spend more.
