aether22: I've bit bullet and going for the 780G (GA-MA78GM-S2H) since as this is a HTPC mostly it will be well worth it, in fact even a Sempron 3200 processor is apparently enough but I'll go probably for a ATHLON64 X2 4200+ 2.2GHZ.

The 780G is apparently very readily overclockable to boot.

I am thinking about building an extender using this MB and would like to know how you find it performs.

Steve (sbiddle) or anyone else with an opinion: any thoughts on this vs a good H264 video card (say 8500GT/8600GT)? Assuming it delivers the frame rate what else might be missing (e.g. good deinterlacing)?

PVR: Intel E8400 3.0GHz, MSI 945GCM5, 2GB RAM, MSI 8500GT HDMI, Hauppauge HVR3000, Philips 47pfl9532, MediaPortal RC2

I don't think anybody has any ideas what the 780G chipset will be like. On paper it should be great to until somebody builds up a system we're not really going to know!

Hi There, just a quick report. Running a Athlon XP 3700+ with a 7600GS (PCI-X) card. Ive got all the bits and pieces on with hardware acelleration, but a its a no go with this card (even tho it is reported as being PureVideoHD). Put one of my 8800GTs into the htpc and CPU usage droped from 90-100% to 20-30%.

Hmmm... think ill order a 8600GT. then mayme a new mobo, then a new CPU...

Just to add to the record, the 7300GT does not work either. I have ordered an 8600GT to replace it.

BTW: What card did you order... I would be keen to get your feedback once you have installed.

The 7x00 series of cards had the first gen of PureVideo which is not really any good for DVB-T.  The second generation of cards included the earlier 8x00 series of cards. These will run DVB-T with hardware acceleration with no problems.  The 3rd generation are the preferred cards as they have even better hardware acceleration for everything.  The 8400/8500's should be mostly 3rd gen although there will still be a few of the 2nd gen cards floating around.  The 8800GTS/X were both 2nd gen, the 8800GT is 3rd..  All the 9x00 series are 3rd.

Im using a 8400GS 2nd Gen card with a Athlon64 3200+.  Runs it all perfectly.  I had a 7600GT and it ran like crap.  You dont need to spend a fortune on a card - the 8400GS's should retail for well under $100 and are pefectly fine for the job.  The 3rd gen 8400GS is a joke as far as games go though but if its just for a mediacentre computer it doesnt matter.

I will be buying in a 780G based board when I finally see one of my wholesalers selling them (I havent seen any as of yet).  Its graphics is based on the Radeon HD2400 series core so it should be more than sufficient to handle it. Of course any onboard GPU is still going to be more CPU intensive than the equiv in addon cards.  The downside is Ive always found ATI equipment to be fairly temperamental at the best of times.

Wicked.. the old 7600GS does not cut it. I was going to order one of these:

Only because it has no fan. Look forward to hearing your comments on your card!

Well I have installed and tested the 8600GT and it works. CPU usage sits at around 5% on TV3. I still have problems viewing Freeview|HD and Maori TV for some reason. Also changing the channel takes a little longer.

I have a core2duo E6420 and Asus P5B mobo.

Freeview|HD is stuttery and Maori Channel/tvcentral sometimes freezes GB-pvr or just doesint display. All other channels are fine.
