Have had my DSE box around 5 days now, all seems to be going well, but does get pretty warm 57 degrees is the highest
I have recorded yet.

Had two freezes but only when switching channels, I do get the occassional audio clipping, but not often.

So all in all am very pleased, the pic quality on TV3 is amazing, though i find the saturation on channel 100 not quite righ even after adjustment.

Connected to my 50" Pioneer Plasma, looks awesome @ 1080i

A agree the picture on the Pioneer 50i nch is great but can you get the correct wide screen aspect ratio? (that is a black line above and below the image). I have found that only 576p or 576i lets you change the aspect - on the video format 720p or
1080i the aspect ratio on the remote is inactive. It is also inactive on the remote for the Pioneer remote. Both works correctly if you return to 576p ir of course 576i (called PAL on my OSD)
I have contacted DSE - they could not answer this - they have sent a question to the "manufacturer".
Any one else have this problem?

I am using it with our Sony Bravia 40" LCD at 1080i and it is a pertect fit for the wide screen.

Thanks - I also get a picture that is a "perfect fit" to the 50 inch Pioneer; but - do you have a black line top and bottom of the screen when viewing (most) programmes from TV1, 2 3 or in fact the demo HD channel? If not you are not in wide screen. I can not - the picture is distorted (squashed-in vertcally) unless I use 576p or 576i. Any other feed back?

Put it on the Pillar Box setting. If on a wide screen TV (which I can't see a 50 inich not being) on most wide screen programs there should be no black bars bottom and top.

You only want black bars on top and bottom if watching on 4:3 TV.

Thanks Rugrat - that is a common mistake - the correct aspect for viewing normal widescreen TV broadcasts on a widescreen TV is that there should be a black line top and bottom - check your TV manual. Read my original post - the aspect ratio controls are inactive at 720p and higher
Have since visted DSE Lower Hitt - they have exactly the same problem as mine with their Phi;lips and Sony LCD's - so it looks like a bug in the HD receiver software.

Material in 4:3 formats will have black bars (or curtains) at the sides of the frame. Some footage
especially archive footage will be in 4:3 format so will be broadcast with the black bars.
Most new programmes are produced in the 16:9 formats so will fill the entire screen. Previously 4:3
images were stretched to fill the screen but this distorts the images. Return to Contents

Please note the words above "16:9 formats so will fill the entire screen." In my books fill the entire screen means no bars top and bottom.

Guess why aspect ratio has no effect on 720p etc is because all TV's cabable of displaying 720p and above are wide screen.
If the picture is filling your screen for wide screen it is being displayed correctly. Sounds like a whole lot of people don't know what they're doing.

No bugs in HD reciever equipment. Those guys at DSE are going to look like a bunch of idots when they query Zinwell etc about it.

Here's another forem where person didn't know what they're talking about with wide screen, plus confusion caused because most movie DVD's produce bars (which I guess is what you're use to watching).

There should be no black bars displayed on a widescreen TV when viewing 16:9 footage :) The options disable as the TV is displaying it in the correct format.

4:3 footage will display with black bars on the right and left.

I think Rugrat has explained it better than I have, but yeah the guy's at DSE should of advised you of this when you called through. Looks like they dont know what they're selling (what a shocker ;))

Have the Zinwell, which is the same as DSE's. Oh well since it's not broke, good luck in getting it fixed. Bye. :)

Widescreen material on all of the Freeview channels should have *no* bars on either side or the top or bottom of the screen.

If the show has been recorded in 16:9 widescreen it will take up the whole of the screen.

If the show has been recorded in 4:3 it will have no borders at the top or bottom. It will have black bars on the left and right.

Some widescreen material movies will have bars at the top and bottom, these are movies that are filmed in 2.33:1 (cinemascope) vs the 1.85:1 ratio for regular widescreen.

If you are watching a typical widescreen show on any of the Freeview channels and have bars on either the sides or bottom you have the aspect ratio on your TV set incorrectly as these should not be there. The screen should be full.

I have a series 6 Pioneer 50" Plasma and had no issues at all hooked up via component and HDMI. Just make sure the TV aspect ratio is correctly set.

This is incorrect as I have mentioned above. You will only have black bars at the top and bottom for 2.33:1 content which is now reasonably common for DVD's and virtually guaranteed for Bluray/HD-DVD movies.
