I watch more on Māori TV than TVNZ / Mediaworks combined. Real documentaries and programming than the reality rubbish on the other channels.

Yes people do watch it and it is actually a very good channel, way better than any of the media works efforts. It is excellent that it will be HD.

Good to hear, Maori TV gets roughly $33 million a year from taxpayers. I'm please to hear that someone actually watches it.

Saying that, I would much rather see that $33 million a year spent on other things. Bringing the AB games onto freeview would be a good start, and a far better use of that money.

Seriously? All Blacks play 8 tests this year (according to allblacks.com), so that is a total of 16 hours of television. Given that Prime current screen these games on a delay, it would seem like a complete waste of $33 million compared to the quality that Māori TV produce.

I guess people have different ideas on what is important.

The money should not be used for Rugby. The current assignment to Maori TV is appropriate and an excellent use of the funds. Maori TV show cases New Zealands culture, educates and entertains.

If I recall correctly, Maori channel has proposed this themselves in the past. Dont know what happened.

Its debatable that this channel is really even watched by a good portion of New Zealanders. My guess would be less than 5%. Surely attracting more viewers to the channel is a win-win for all? Bring the games onto Maori TV, and scrap some of the other crap. Rugby is out culture :-)

Or, if you do mean "our" culture, you're not speaking for me and I'm sure many other NZers for whom rugby doesn't form some key component of our identity.

A quick Internet search show 1.5 million per month in 2009. http://www.throng.co.nz/2009/03/maori-television-marks-fifth-on-air-anniversary/ "Maori[sic] Television now reaches more than 1.5 million New Zealanders each month" I can't seem to find an independent source for more recent figures.

Yea, but where do you draw the line.

With 4K already available, 720p/1080p is fast becoming the new SD. Sky should move with the times and start offering 4K, charging people extra for that is acceptable. Don't charge extra for standard HD. Thats just an insult. Even most of freeview these days is in HD.
