Hi shermanp,

I agree with Nirodha, I had same issues as you, went back to 8.42 catalyst and used the registry hacks from here;
http://exdeus.home.comcast.net/~exdeus/ati-hd2x00/
and all was well as long as I ran at only 720p as my 2400 HD card cannot handle 1080i or 1080p. Your card should have mor than enough grunt.

Unfortunately, the big problem I have is that my card is new enough that those drivers will not install, as I don't have a "compatible graphics card" :(
The driver simply refuses to install

You might be able to copy the old ones in manually, if you have the time and the will to do so that is. Exactly how one would go about doing that I'm not sure though as I haven't had to do it myself. Also, you maybe able to modify some *.inf file in the driver package to include an entry for your card - thereby fooling the install process in doing something it wont currently.

Sorry but I would NOT suggest doing this. You are more then likely going to make a real mess of your OS and the chance of it working is I would suggest slim at best. Hey if you dont mind having to rebuild your media centre or have a good backup then give it a go but I would not even consider that without a known good backup or the willingness to rebuild when it goes bad.

No, I don't thinl I will try such a thing, especially since there ARE some differences between the HD2000 series and HD3000 series..

Ah well..

/me hopes he drivers shipped with Catalyst 8.5 will be better (unlikely...).

There's no need to be sorry over a difference of opinion. However, that's what System Restore is for, mate. Make a mess of one's system? No problem. Go to System Restore and roll back the changes in a few moments.

sherman, if you do decide to hack the old drivers in, please set a restore point prior to doing so.

Maybe slightly off-topic, but in reading all the threads re ATI cards, I still haven't been able to rule out whether something like a ATI HD2400 AGP card works OK with Windows XP. If it does it would be $120 well spend and avoid having to upgrade to a PCI-e motherboard etc etc.

Hi there,
I looked into the AGP card option a while ago for the same reason, -keep existing board etc with no PCIe slot. From what I read the AGP option was never intended by ATI, it was something the card manufacturers offered. In doing the conversion to AGP some critical functionality was lost and the hardware decoding of h.264 never worked properly. What's more is because it was not supported by them, the ATI drivers didn't work with the AGP cards and you had to wait for the card company to produce a custom driver.
Basically it came down to don't even go there, and it looks the same for ATI under Vista even with PCIe. Things might have changed now though and there may be a custom driver that actually works. You can't trust what's written on the box for the AGP cards though and I think it's safer to just pick a card that's proven to work, even it it's a few more $.

yes i have look on the ATI website. 8.42 catalyst drivers is refering to the internal version not the release versions. the release version all go up by points..e.g 8.3, 8.4, 8.5 etc
