If you want to record TV, it's better to go for a Freeview Recorder than a TV with USB recording functionalities. Main advantage is that the recorders all come with twin-tuner so you can record on two TV stations at the same time (or watch something on Live TV while you record something else); TVs with USB recording functionalities would only allow you to record a single channel (the only exception to this is the high end Panasonic OLED TVs, which have twin UHF tuners).

Transfer recordings to mobile devices
Scrape metadata and posters for saved recordings
Stream contents around the house
Add as much storage as you need
Bypass DRM

This point often comes up, but I have almost never seen anything on any one Freeview channel I would want to record, let alone two of them simultaneously. Where is this marvelous content that makes it worth having two tuners? And even on the blue moon occasion that you might want to do this, you can always just stream the other channel. I don't see the argument for dual tuners in NZ, which I think are just marketing BS. Does anyone actually use this?

I often have two channels being recorded at the same time or at least partially overlapping. I find there's either nothing worth watching on Freeview or two good shows / movies on opposing networks at the same time.

Two Tuners is a minimum requirement as far as I am concerned.

would avoid dish, pansonic is great , Netflix app is good, mainly use as media player have harddrive hooked up plays the majority of formats. free view plus for kids tv

My wife would strongly disagree with you, so yes we most certainly do use two tuners.

We purchased a Panasonic DMR-BWT760 as a replacement for a Tivo. Generally happy with it, although it does have a few quirks around the "live pause" functionality compared to a Tivo. There are quite a number of other threads here where people have commented what they do and don't like about about the Panasonic models. Do a search.

if my memory isn't failing I recall that Samsung has a recorder/bluray combo a while back, have they dropped it?

It depends on just what you like to watch. I am a TV hoarder - I like to record anything I might ever like to watch. In my MythTV box I have three DVB-T tuners in use for FreeviewHD and four DVB-S2 tuners for Sky and there are times during the week when all of them are in use at the same time. I regularly have clashes when I do not have enough DVB-T tuners to record from HGTV or ChoiceTV at the same time as everything else, but since they seem to repeat everything at least three times in a week, I have been able to just record one of the repeats. But now, due to Maori TV moving to a new fifth mux to go HD, I am getting even more clashes with the DVB-T tuners so it looks like I now need at least four. The aerial system is getting overloaded, suffciently so that I am not sure if I can actually add another single tuner. So I have ordered one of the new TBS6209 octa tuner DVB-T2 cards - they have just one aerial input for the eight tuners:

It is interesting and educational to see just how much people get from Freeview. The broadcasters must be doing something right. I see little (when I bother to look) that appeals to me, but I know my taste is not mainstream. Clearly there is a reason for those multiple tuners.

From the FTA D1 satellite a Zgemma I have can permit the decoding and recording of two transponders with its two tuners. For what I have set up that is 10, 5, 3 channels. AND ed from two transponders simultaneously. Too bad if I want a channel off a third transponder. I will have to fire up the dish tv S8200 as well to do that.

Comparing the two decoders.

Zgemma blisteringly fast very twiddle able. A very large dish might give 16 apsk for HD Australian TV

S8200 is simple and will have some chance of technical service and support but there is something about it that indicates to me that it might have limitations that cater to the needs of a third party. It is not as I first thought the restriction of fast forwarding through advertisements in recorded program. It is not used much. It is HD ready if the cartel ever allows it on FTA satellite.
