What I learned when installing my antenna is that DVB-T has some funny quirks. Digital tends to be all or nothing so a marginal signal can either look perfect or pixelated depending on small changes. The other thing is that UHF reflects in odd ways, which can also affect reception. We aren't surrounded by houses but there was a big hill in the way, much higher than the aerial could go. Yet I found a sweet spot on a high mast that gave us perfect reception. Higher or lower deteriorated the signal, but the height that worked, a few meters above the roof, worked perfectly.

Thanks Rikkitic,
I have no doubt the people coming over to fix this will have their signal quality monitors as such, but as you say go with what works.
It all comes down to the result, if it works and it works solidly then who can complain.

Cheers

Yeh lazy project manager and sparkly.
There would have been a few extra $$ for the job if they thought about it at the start.

Still working on this, the builders of the house agree the aerial is not in the right place. (Go figure)
Just waiting on the sparky that installed it to contact me and then I'll update this with the resolution. (as if we don't know)

OK, complete resolution.
1) Big as pole on the roof to attach the aerial to.
2) Pointing the aerial so it is actually looking at the transmitter. (The first problem they found was the aerial was pointing in the wrong direction)
3) Prime signal still weak but usable, when we have some bad weather will prove if it holds viewable.
I might look at an amplified splitter.

They did not want to move the aerial as they would have to have scaffolding erected just to go on the roof (Health and safety).
I'll tick the answers but in reality we all knew what the problem was (baring them not knowing how to point the aerial in the right direction).

Yup, will do tomorrow.
(The fix and I'll measure the length of the gap to the roof of the new house being built and the aerial in it's original position, but it was a couple of arm lengths roughly.)
To be honest I think it is a stop gap approach because the whole moving it on the roof involves scaffolding being erected in the first place.

OK, and it continues.
Bright sunny days, not a cloud in the sky the TV reception via the aerial turns to rubbish.
Today for example, cloudy at the start and TV looked OK signal level in the 7's to 9's and and quality (depending on the channel) of 6->10, then in the space of an hour it cleared up, blue skys, nice and clear.
Then it turned to rubbish, Prime mux was not there, TVNZ and Mediaworks mux was registering on the signal level (about 5-7 on the TV), but signal quality was zilch.

To be honest, I'm out of ideas baring an amplified splitter.
Raising the aerial has obviously helped.

But why in supposedly perfect conditions does it degrade to rubbish however in less perfect conditions the aerial and wiring performs as expected.

Are there any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Terry

So can the antenna see Sugarloaf, i.e., have line of sight??

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

That picture shows a pretty rough install. Cable poorly attached, and an installer too lazy to cut off cable tie ends.
I have no faith in the abilities of someone that does a job like this. It might still be just a poor install.

Hi Spyware, We are out at Rolleston, so not really visable to the naked eye but I think line of sight is not a problem here as it's clear ground with the raised aerial and at least the aerial is pointing in the right direction.
The why when it's cloudy and good reception vs clear day and rubbish still evades me.

Thanks Andrew,

That was the second "install" as such BUT points WELL noted.
This was the same firm that gave me CAT-6 cabling internally but only installed a 100 meg switch for said networking (which I had to point out).
Given they are also not very responsive to my queries/issues and also the guy from the same firm saying they had contacted their suppliers for a resolution and they said lets try this and it will cost .........
I am losing faith very quickly in the current firm.

Does anyone know a decent aerial/electrical firm in the Rolleston/Christchurch area?
