hmm interesting, can't think of a use for it myself unless you have a ton of cloud storage? I rarely access my media remotely and if I do I normally sync it to my iPad to watch offline

Apotheosis: ... I did a search for Police Ten 7 which is airs on a Thursday and I get no results in Plex? ...

I'm going through the DVR set up again. What location did you choose for your DVR? Previously I chose 'National'

I think the missing Police Ten 7 etc. is down to our local Plex EPG being incomplete, there are a number of posts on the Plex Forum about it, including this one specifically about the NZ EPG: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/269792/new-zealand-auckland-missing-programs-in-program-guide#latest

Plex, like many other TV service providers use EPG data from Gracenote. Unfortunately lots of users around the world are having issues with incomplete or error ridden EPG data. Plex have a form to submit so that they can collect the issues and attempt to get them fixed: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/281569/reporting-gracenote-epg-data-issues#latest

I have been using Plex for a few years to catalogue and stream locally stored content (I'm a big fan), and recently started to look into using the Plex DVR feature. I’ve now ditched Sky, and replaced it with this:

  • Plex running on a Win 10 PC with plenty of storage
  • PC has a Hauppauge WinTV-quadHD tuner card, connected to a UHF aerial (can receive/record 4 channels at once)
  • A pretty new LG smart TV, with the Plex and Netflix apps running on it
  • TV and PC are both wired to the home network

Only thing purchased specifically for the DVR capability was the tuner card (about NZ$200)

To operate we:

  • Watch Freeview channels live via the TV's built in tuner - a USB hard disk plugged into the back of the TV enables pause and rewind of live TV
  • To schedule a TV broadcast recording we use the Plex app EPG either via an iPad or on the PC (can't do it on the TV app)
  • To watch either recorded TV or local content we use the Plex app on the TV
  • Netflix via the app on the TV

It works a treat, even the wife can work it without too much drama ;) (at lease she seems to have no trouble alternating between recorded episodes of Location Location Location, and a local copy of Downton Abbey – makes me wonder why I bother sometimes!).

The only issue we really have is the gaps in the Plex/Gracenote EPG, all Freeview channels are there but I reckon there are maybe 5-10% of programs missing, seemingly at random over different channels. I can get round these gaps by using the WinTV EPG/recording software that came with the tuner card, which has been reliable to date – just can’t use my iPad so it’s a little less convenient.

I encourage anyone using the PLEX DVR function to log their EPG issues using the URL above (which isn't a link cos I'm "new around here"), hopefully they’ll sort it soon.

Thanks Wigginers, sounds like you've managed to overcome the EPG issues. The HDhomerun EPG must use a different EPG content provider as it seems a lot more complete than the Gracenote version. The problem I have is a wife that doesn't understand spending $80 a month with a TV subscriber to provide lack lustre content is a problem when it's so easy to use, she just wants an absolutely no fuss alternative or is happy to pay Sky. Myself I'm almost at the point where i'd pay anyone but Sky nz $80 a month cool. At the moment i'm using the following:

  • Plex DVR for recording OTA transmissions that show up in the EPG
  • HDhomerun DVR (yes I bought the addon) for recording ota transmissions that don't show up in the Plex EPG, I'm then asking Plex to pick them up and add them to a "Live TV" folder, metadata scraping is pretty crap, it seems to get the program right but most of the time Plex can't decipher the season / episode numbers
  • I've written some AHK scripts to flick between HDhomerun and Plex apps on my HTPC. but the remote control input for the HDhomerun app is pretty shonky.

All of this makes for a solution that I am not prepared to UAT with the wife cool. I don't have an ariel on my main house (it's on a detached sleepout 50 metres away), hence using the HDhomerun box to move the signal to the main house. I'm thinking of getting an NVidia shield but at $600 it's pretty hard to justify even with some serious man maths...

I've logged a missing episode thingy on the plex site.

I know you're set up and comfortable with Plex, but I thought I'd mention that I'm using a HDHomerun with tvheadend + kodi (+ emby, but not for live TV), which behaves exactly how it sounds like you want a PVR to behave - and it's all free. No messing about with external EPG providers, it just uses the 7 day OTA data. EPG is presented in the traditional "Sky" way for maximum WAF.

Would you consider authoring a numpy's guide to setting this up? My biggest challenge is getting Netflix+Plex+Live TV+DVR in a one stop shop. I had it for a few years when there was a native Netflix app for WMC.

At the moment I've abandoned Netflix and settled on Windows 8.1, WMC and Open PHT.

Apple TV+Plex DVR didn't cut the mustard, I lost $50 on that experiment. Does Nvidia Shield with Kodi app support skipping ads, or is it just FF/RWD?

Which program is collecting and showing the epg?

+1 for a guide to this setup.

My win7 WMC system has been great, but struggles a bit when it’s playing, recording, and transcoding for the Xbox in the sleepout.
I can’t find a quad core FM2 processor to upgrade it, and I can’t upgrade the MOBO without having to get a new OS. So it looks like time for an overhaul!

PS if anyone has a better processor they don’t need I’d be keen to buy it.

Interests: HTPC, Web App authoring.

I'll look into it, I played with Kodi for a while but couldn't get it stable for some reason.

There are Windows equivalents which do the exact same job as tvheadend - NextPVR is the most popular I think.

I'll work on a wee guide when I have some time.

You can FF/RWD or skip ahead/back by a specific time period. I often skip ahead by 3:50, which tends to be how long ads last in primetime. Should really bind that one to a dedicated button actually.
