If they go 100% streaming then that would require all customers to have an unmetered (or very high data allowance) Internet connection. People in rural and remote communities don't have this, and probably never will. For example with RBI, 120GB will set you back $100. That's about 90 hours of HD streaming a month. If you have kids, you'd probably know that 3 hours per day between a family is definitely not enough :) Therefore I am going to assume that Sky will use satellites and STBs for the foreseeable future.

Sky is having enough issues to worry about, than catering for rural. Netflix etc dont cater for rural. Rural can get Freeview. If Sky does stay with Optus, its still a hard row to hoe. Rural wont help them financially.

A lot of Rural can't get Freeview Over the air and need satellite which is in SD. If they want HD then Sky is their only option or are you an urban dweller who couldn't give a toss about rural??

Im not rural, FV is there for satellite for rural people. With all the anti Sky hate, its ok for them to have to use 1980's tech to deliver FTA TV to rural people? Why can FV use HD on satellite, or is that too much cost, so leave that for someone else to stump up with? If Sky got woth the play and went SVOD only then that satisfies all the haters, but then it becomes Sky's fault?

It's great when my single tuner PVR is recording something on one channel, and I want to watch a TVNZ channel live. The live stream also supports Chromecast. The ThreeNow app doesn't (you can only cast pre-recorded shows)

I did a comparison before Xmas of a NFL game via Duke streaming and Amazon streaming and Amazon looked way better. Amazon (Fire TV) looked like HD where as Duke (Chromecast) looked like a slightly improved SD.

What I suspect is in order to lower transmission costs various things are done above and beyond lowering resolution from HD to SD to shrink things down
For this reason I also suspect that not all HD received is equal in quality ...

Makes it hard to work out which HD and audio is best

That's not Sky's problem (except for Prime HD). The Freeview SD service is provided by Kordia who rent satellite capacity on Optus D1. This is separate from the bandwidth Sky use for their services (including FTA HD). Sky are not a charity!, so they aren't going to just hand over capacity to Kordia for free.

Thats it. Sky do provide FTA for $18 a month, cheap. But if they, based on customer demands for modern tech, and lower price points, it will be up to Kordia to improve what they currently provide. Sky may well go 100% SVOD. Or be Sport only

Far as I can tell the TVNZ1 etc stuff you can get via t' interweb only goes up to 1280x720. Were we live thats still a lot better than SD. Only stuff I've seen at 1920x1080 is Al Jazeera (from memory).

I can see a couple of 'hidden' TVNZ channels on UHF Freeview - 100 and 101. Loading as SD, but no picture.
