Just did a quick capture of HD Freeview. Advertising HD for TV1 and TV2 with samples from both. Not a huge sample but all the audio seems to be AAC 2.0 so that doesn't bode well for when they go live, especially the comment about we will broadcast surround sound if it's available. All the samples I saw were from sources that should be 5.1 including Criminal Minds, Cold Case, Poseidon (the movie)

Agreed.  I could not see the logic of a HD demo channel that was not transmitting audio in AAC only rather than AC3..

TVNZ seem to have messed up on the audio front.  TV3 are transmitting DD AC3 and apart from a slight problem with stereo sources, are doing a great job of showing how to introduce HD.  I have seen a few shows that were not even advertised as HD.

I'm using Media Portal and an HV2200 for viewing Freeview terrestrial.  Have noticed a strange "cricket" sound on the HD showreel (Poseidon etc) when using SPDIF to my receiver, anyone else noticed it?  No problems on the other channels, maybe a problem with the AAC codec or TVNZ's encoder.  Also noticing frame stuttering half the time in the HD showreel, it varies and is not on the same clips each time and again it does not happen on any other channel.

Cheers
Andy

I can't watch in real time (not a grunty enough PC and inadequate video card). But the captures I did via gbpvr and a Hauppauge HVR-900H were fine (including Poseidon). No cricket there and this was on both the AAC audio and converted to ac3 audio.

Interesting since when I try to view this on my PCH, like TV3 it identifies the audio as DTS but there is no audio at all.Just wondering what other folks are getting.

[edit]

OK analysed the stream. The audio is still AAC-HE LATM but they are also including a AC3 stream (tag) but there is no data there.  Getting prepared perhaps?

I suspect that your PCH is identifying the audio as DTS  so it won't output DTS via HDMI only coax digital audio feed..

No. The TV3 streams are also identified as DTS and I hear them fine. I use coax digital for the audio and although the PCH thinks they are DTS, my AVR signals DD.

I actually analysed the streams using dgavcindex and it showed that the main audio stream was LATM/LAOS and there was a secondary stream AC3 but it had no data.
