I dont actually use my TV tuner at all, just the Panasonic. Your TV should be able to network over wifi with your PC anyway.

Not sure why NZ has such a poor choice of recorders...its appalling really, but guess it is our market size.

Personally I don't find much need to record stuff these days. I used to record when we had sky and also on our old freeview box. Our Samsung Smart TV can record but I never bother.

So much is available via streaming. We buy Netflix, get Lightbox with our internet and then have Freeveiw OD. Never short of something to watch. I wonder if I'm typical and if this is behind the low availability of recorders?

Freeview on demand is delivered over your internet connection. You don't need an antenna. You should be able to access it already.

The antenna is only for live tv.

Note that this is not fully correct. The new Freeview on demand app, while delivering content over the internet, requires a satellite or terrestrial connection to work. My parents just bought a new Samsung tv and use a T-Box. The Freeview on-demand app would not work until connected to an aerial. Quite annoying as while the TVNZ app is still available and can be used without, the 3Now app is no longer available and all content is accessed via the Freeview on demand app.

Exactly what I recently discovered. Didn't have the UHF aerial connected to the TV, only to the Tivo and when the 3Now app disappeared from the TV apps list figured I could just get Freeview on Demand via (whatever coloured button - can't recall) the remote. But it doesn't work unless you have an aerial connected, which seems an odd restriction given everything past that point is internet delivered.

So it would seem. I found this info buried in their website which indicates it needs an antenna connected. Presumably because it gets the EPG OTA and won't work without it. Seems a bit stupid when their EPG is also available online.

Also noticed they don't have the FOD App available for devices other than TVs and Recorders so you can only use a FOD compatible Smart TV or Recorder.

Using freeview OD though means having to watch the adverts. That is why tv channels love ondemand, because you can't remove the ads. Also allows them to ad a paid version in the future that can get rid of the adverts, similar to what youtube red does. Whereas tivoing a program you can skips the ads, and save a good amount of time.

You have to have the correct firmware on your TV. Not all of them are set-up for FOD.

I have the updated firmware - it's an internet connected Sony X90F (Android TV) with an Apple TV also connected but no aerial of any kind. I do a scan for digital channels and it doesn't find Freeview, so I'm guessing that I actually need the UHF aerial ((which I won't be doing)

There is no scanning for internet services

If it's 'scanning' it's looking or digital broadcast channels - either UHF or satellite. You need an antenna or dish connected depending on your TV.

I have found that I don't need RF connection to get streamed Freeview.

My smart TV is not connected to an aerial but seems to have access to all the programmes my wife watches (and I don't).

I have purchased a modified Tivo for my dumb TV but have not yet got it hooked up.
