Does this mean the general availability of a freeview NZ application for Android TV? If not, I hope someone will extract the APK so I can put them on my Shield TVs.

No. I asked Dish TV about a week ago if the Freeview NZ app would be made availe to other devices.  To quote them:

The Freeview app will remain exclusive I'm afraid.

The only way will be if someone extracts the APK.

This disappoints me. I do not need another device to access something that I can get over the air for free

You aren't paying for the content. It's no different than having a set-top box - in fact it adds a third option (terrestrial, satellite, streaming). You pick whatever suits you.

Plugged it and started the setup. There's an update out of the box to a version 20181129. Installing now.

We've got an underused tv in the bedroom.  No external aerial, iPads etc get used for netflix.  This is a good alternative where Sky is in a diff room and chrome cast functionality means we can stream other content from the phone/ipad

We are paying for the content, by buying all the rubbish advertisers throw at us. Streaming provides opportunities in establishing accurate viewership, usage patterns and possibly even targeted advertising. Streaming should be seen as the ultimate replacement for DVB, because as we have seen from Google, Microsoft and Facebook, user data has significant value.

Freeview On Demand will be available in 2019

Will stick with the Apple TV for now.

Ok... Netflix is available on this device (as well as Lightbox and Spotify) but as noted, no Freeview on Demand yet. Live TV is streamed - the quality ramps up quickly but starts a bit lower than SD.

I wouldn’t call this device a replacement for an Apple TV, as thatboretty much has all the functionality of this and more.

But it is more of a replacement for those that find a Chromecast as an annoying interface for use.
