I have one of these boxes. It seems to work fine, I hit auto tune and all the channels came up and the picture is great. The guy has answered heaps of questions on trademe to save you wondering what is included and what is not. The EPG is apparantly working via a USB update, but so far I havent been able to get the update to work on my unit. I assume they are actually transmitting the EPG? The one I have is a sample (non NZ power cord) so possibly may have an issue.

At $290 its not bad, plus you get an HDMI cable included.

Yeah the boxes are now available and the MHEG5 EPG problem has been sorted. If you had one of the earlier sample units then you might need to check if it's possible to correct any issues now.

I'm getting a bulk order on Friday (hopefully) so I'll write a bit about what I find then too. I'm passing on most of these to my mates, but PM me if you're after one cos I might have a few left over yet at a cheaper rate too.

You're right though, best buy on the market at the mo definitely and runs cool too from what I hear, plus working EPG and HD out on component. Awesome.

hi guys havent received my box, but do you think we'd get firmware usb update that will allow hard disk recording, divx mkv mp4 support?

mmm cant wait to move from analogue tv to hd digital!

It's doable but requires work from the manufacturer. Will see how the local distributor goes in pushing for this functionality. I'd say the hardware looks like it can do this, so yeah it's just an internal software thing. Like you, I really hope they achieve this as this box does have the EPG, unlike the recording alternatives that don't.

Jaxson, what is the exact model you have got that works with the EPG? I got confused in the thread and couldn't work it out!

Anyone know whether there is a firmware for the Vantage HD 6000/T to get the EPG working in NZ?
Also, does this STB sometimes go by a different brand name? I Can't find anything about it on the net.

Hi there,

I'm refering to the satlink eXtra Terrestrial box. This has the working EPG.

Basically if a set top box has a working EPG it will make a point of letting you know, cos it takes some extra work to actually make this work. If you're considering a box that makes no reference to MHEG5 EPG then chances are it doesn't have it.

I'm awaiting my order from satlink so I can't comment on the eXtra Terrestrial box until it arrives. This has been delayed again into next week so will miss the first bit of the games coverage.

fellas sorry to disappoint - been told not getting it at least till middle of nextweek (had to ask yesterday as to why hadnt turned up, info wasn't volunteered) - so i cancelled the order as wont be in time for olympic opening ceremony

I just can't believe how many times this product has been delayed. It's a real pity we won't have it in time for the beginning of the Olympics, and based on the many date slippages, I'll be surprised if we see it before the end of them. I've been promised a sample for several months, and followed this up religiously, but the few samples that have arrived have gone to others or been sold direct by the importer on Trademe.

Maybe I would, but this one holds real promise, as long as it's hype holds up.

Can you suggest a box other than this one that:
1. Does HD over component? (Zinwell/DSE and other "approved" boxes need not apply)
2. Has a proper 7-8 day guide as it supports M-HEG5 (Sorry the Strongs need not apply here)
3. Has a timer function (Sorry Zinwell/DSE need not apply)
4. Claims that when the next firmware update is available, you'll be able to use it as a PVR with ext HDD (any takers aprt from Strong?)
5. Costs a reasonable amount. (Strong seems a great box, but no proper guide - just "now and next" so at $500+ is way too dear)

As you can see, this ET box really does tick all the boxes, but could end up being a POS. That's why I'm holding out for a sample before setting customers and friends up with something. Bloody annoying all these, and I mean lots and lots of slipped dates. Anyone would think this was a new MS OS.

I understand the frustration!!

I want a decent Freeview HD set top box now too! But for under $300. Are there any others we know of yet?

err ... did you say that the current "model" WILL support PVR via ext HDD? if so we all need to buy!
he seems to suggest to me that a future model from october (well, that's what he says so i cant say i wont be delayed till Feb when playTV is out) will do that. he did not answer my question about firmware upgrade to support PVR
