megui just calls x264.exe for the compression and I have not had much luck with that. Files compress okay but they end up blocky ot sticking on playback and don't talk to me about maintaining audio/video sync!

I believe I read that Auto Gordian Knot (AutoGK) can do one step conversion of .ts to divx/xvid but havn't tried it personally. Its great for converting DVDs though

EDIT: yes it does

- DVD/VOBs(unencrypted from hdd), MPEG2, MPEG1, transport streams (including multi-program ones) and AVI/DV input sources
- XviD or DivX(5/6) output formats
- AC3, DTS, PCM, MPA input audio tracks
- AC3, DTS, MPA, CBR/VBR MP3 output audio tracks
- two audio tracks in AVI
- external (vobsub) or internal (burnt-in) subtitles (with support of forced subs)
- HDTV input/output resolutions(upto 1920x***) and frame rates (50/60fps)
- automatic crop and resize based on compressibility of the source to achieve best results
- automatic detection of input source: PAL, NTSC, FILM, HYBRID
- automatic deinterlacer and IVTC
- automatic split into CD-sized chunks for main video and external subs

Not surprised given the AAC-HE LATM audio we have. But so far I haven't been able to compress the AC3 audio broadcasts I get. But I wondering if it's because my reception is not good and/or my Hauppauge HVR900H is a bit flaky. Will be replacing it with a Nova 500 HD T (something like that) which is PCI card and so ought to be more stable

MediaCoder is the winner so far, I converted an HD olympic clip no worries. sound in sync

StaxRip looks cool, but I need to do more test with it.

AutoGK, yuck, didn't work and didn't uninstall all the stuff it installed.

you have to strip the audio out, and remux it back in later apparently

I use Staxrip a lot, but it throws a paddy with the audio. Also the are no IDR frames which the encoders don't like either. Apparently Megui will work, but I haven't learnt how to use it properly. Also the way it did work was very very slow (1-3 FPS on a Q6600)

Iuse dgavcindex to strip out the audio and it works for AC3 and AAC-HE LATM. Then x264.exe to compress (which is what megui uses). It's slow to be sure. I get 3-4fps on AMD X2 3500. But x264 can be told to use all processors so I would have thought a Quad would run faster than that.

Found another program called besplit which can repair AC3 streams so am now trying that out to see if I can fix sync issues

Mediacoderworks seems to work, mostly and is free. I don't like how it loads a website every time it loads.
Also it has some features, like when it's transcoding, it only dispalys time passed and nothing else.
That can be a worry if your not sure it's going.

I just transcode a 193MB clip to 89.7MB, it took 783 seconds (64bit amd 2.8GHZ dual core)

The other feature i got used to was having to set the output file manually each time.

but it goes

Staxrip looked good but did work for me.

Didn't work for me. Pointed it to a 4.3G .ts file that I had recorded and it said the file was 359Mb and it took about 10s to encode!

I tried Staxrip and couldn't get it to work with the video, even a copy with the audio stripped out.

I ran out of patience with Megui.

Mediacoder seems to work nicely.

Doesn't work for me - now trying Ripbot.

If it all doesn't work I am going to invest in a 1Tb drive and be done with it! My time is worth more $200 for the drive

probably xvid...
i am just wondering about time it take to convert 30 mins HD show. because i ran it last night and it took almost 1 1/2 hr on mediacoder

my machine is AMD X2 on vista
