The OP says he's got a device. That solves the problem in my view.

If someone wants to run Freeview streams on other devices, there are other ways and the OP is aware of it.

Complaining that a company put time and effort into developing a product then makes that product available for their platform - while at the same time thinking of (for lack of better word) pirating the app... That's rich, isn't it?

If the app was called 'dish tv freeview nz' I would have no issue.

The fact that it's branded 'freeview' in my eyes should mean it should work on any android tv device.

"Dish TV Freeview NZ" doesn't mean it belongs to Freeview. It means it works with Freeview. Dish TV likely has the rights (paid for, or otherwise) to use the brand.

There is a big difference between "backed" and "certified". Dish TV funded the development of the app in conjunction with their hardware. The Freeview association comes from the fact it's Freeview certified.

If Freeview had funded the app I could see why people could be angry, but the fact is they didn't.

The best approach here would be to suggest to Dish TV that they offer a paid commercial version of their app. I'd pick somewhere around $10 - $15 for the app would be enough to cover the costs from loss of their hardware sales, and would be a big benefit towards their development costs if they could sell a few thousand copies of it.

As you well know all the streams are publically accessible - if people dislike the other options such as TVirl that are already out there (and IMHO is still a superior offering to the Dish TV app) there is is nothing stopping them building their own.
