It doesn't seem to load TS files but it look's as if it's getting there.

Not that snapshot, an up and coming one - it hasn't been released as yet. You could build it yourself - but on Windows that is a pain.

Building on Windows is strictly for the brave and/or stupid :)

On Linux and Mac it pretty much just builds out of the box.

I've never built the Windows version either - besides as a HB developer I'm duty bound to not distribute unauthorised binary versions of the program.

I'll push for a new snapshot release soon though - it keeps on getting put off - feature creep.

Ok :S seems pretty stupid to me since (in theory) anyone can make the binary themselves.

After a lot of work, I have managed to convert freeview streams into another format,
- Please note, I do not actually have freeview, as it isnt available here *yet*.
Just doing some testing with fozzies samples.

I have been using the latest nero recode for the video encoding. There are a few
things you have to do to get it to work though (temporarily).
1: Disable Monogram AAC/LATM decoder (regsvr32 /u "c:\windows\system32\mmaacd.ax")
2: Disable PowerDVD8 Video Decoder (regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD8\VideoFilter\cl264dec.ax")

Then you can open the .ts file in Recode. It will ignore the AAC/LATM audio.
Compressed it back into AVC, 1920x1080, 2meg bitrate.

Then you can do the audio,
Firstly, nero splitter and decoder needs to be disabled, as it screws everything up, and monogram and pdvd8 enabled:
1: regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nero\DSFilter\nevideo.ax"
2: regsvr32 "c:\windows\system32\mmaacd.ax
3: regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD8\VideoFilter\cl264dec.ax"

I also have loaded Elecard MPEG Demultiplexer, which (once nero is disabled), sends the audio to Monogram AAC
decoder and the video to the cyberlink h264/avc decoder (pdvd8).

To process the audio:

1: create a directshow .avs file, pointing to the .ts file. example: directshowsource ("d:\freeview\04-15_09-31-44_TV3_.ts")
    (this .avs can also be opened by many players and tools, except nero recode!)
2: open .avs file in virtualdub, then used 'save wav' to save out a raw PCM wav file with the audio in it.
    (or, use virtualdub to compress into normal divx).
3: Opened the .wav file in Nero waveeditor and saved as aac .MP4 file, 300kbps, or use virtualdub to save as .mp3.
4: muxed the nero recode .mp4 AVC video file from above, with the .mp4 aac file just created using YAMB.
5: Done. The resulting file is looks great, and is very small (original = 167mb, mp4=36mb) (fozzies boston legal clip)
    So, thats 4.6 hours of 1080p video on one dvd. Hopefully an new spec bluray player would play it also, or do I have to
    convert into AVCREC?

If you need to switch back to nero, make sure reenable nero splitter
(regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nero\DSFilter\nevideo.ax)

Tools used:   Nero Recode 3.1.4.0, powerdvd 8, monogram 0.95 beta, Elecard MPEG Demultiplexer 3.6,
                    virtualdubmod 1.5.10, YAMB 1.6

Edit: Adjusted bitrate to 3mbps for 37" LCD TV, some minor blocking. Still plenty of hours on a dvd.

1. Run dgavcindex on the file and create a project file (suffix .dga)
2. Create a avisynth file with the following lines in it

LoadPlugin("c:\apps\dgavcdec\DGAVCDecode.dll")
AVCSource("TV Show Name.dga")

3. Call this say tv_show.avs

4. Fire up VirtualDub and open this tv_show.avs file

You should be able to view and scroll through the .ts file

From there you can use the Video/Compression option and choose any compression you like viz. xvid or whatever

That worked okay for me but once I muxed the file back with the audio, it went all out of sync

That's a good method. Works in virtual dub, nandub and Dr. DivX. You can fix the sync issue in virtual dub.
I prefer Dr. DivX as i like the simple encoding options it has.

Yes for the time being VirtualDub seems the way to go.

The bonus is that it can be automated (when I get some spare time), and it will also be possible to add the intermediate step of converting the avi to an mpg then running comskip over it to detect the ads, then cutting the ads with VirtualDub.

Will probably take 2+hours for every hour recorded, but that's Ok because there are only 3 shows a week worth recording (and one of those isn't on any more :-( ).

I've just downloaded SUPER 2008 build 33 (Sep 01, 2008) and gave that a try. Used settings Mencoder, xvid, 640x368, 2000kb/s, 25fps, mp3 128kb/s, 44100 on a 220mb olympic hd ts file. The result was a 45mb avi of pretty good quality. Was out of sync -200ms but fixed that easy with virtual dub.

Also tried ArcSoft MediaConverter. It supports output formats wmv, mp4 and mov. Using settings wmv 9, 640x360, 2000kb/s, 29fps, wma 128kb/s, 44100 on a 220mb olympic hd ts file. The result was a 48mb wmv file of pretty good quality. No sync issues.

I have downloaded the Arcsoft Mediaconverter 2.5 and the h264cutter and have successfully converted the files to play in .avi, .mp4 and .wmv and played them with AUDIO on the popcorn hour. The Arcsoft converter doesn't like .ts files but I just changed the suffix to .mpg and it accepted the file.

I started with an original files size of 81Mb and with AVI it converted to 76Mb, MP4 57Mb and wmv 30Mb . I used mpeg2 with 1280x720 and 6000k/bs on an HD file and the file is a bit smaller than the original but keeps the quality great for converting to dvd using ConvertxDVD.

Thanks to charley for finding an easy converter which looks like it can handle batch conversion with no sync issues !!

The new VLC 0.9.2 seems to play TS files very well, I wonder if it can do transcoding too.
Not that I have used VLC for transcoding before, I hope the learning curve is simple.

Does anyone else have a problem with DGAVCIndex giving errors and then crashing. The errors I'm getting are ones like:
'Found NALU w/ forbidden_bit set, bit error? Let's try...'

I get several of these and if I suppress the errors it then crashes. Does this mean that my original capture is corrupt? Is there any way to repair the transport stream file before running it through DGAVCIndex?

This program looks like a very good way of converting Freeview to other formats via VirtualDub but maybe is not quite there yet I guess.
