Wouldn't that require 3 tuners as you are doing 3 things?

dear sommet -
does it have a usb to transfer 1) firmware and 2) play all divx, mkv and all other movie formats?
can it be programmed to crop a 2.35:1 to a 16:9 show (i ~~have~~ black lines)

thanks!

edit - i hate black lines - paid for 50" would like to see picture in the whole of it.

If he meant "record 2 and watch a fully pre-recorded one."

Then I suggest he stops trying to mislead people and state it as such.
His statement suggests it was possible to record 2 live shows while watching a third.

You can record 2 channels and watch a third with satellite pvr's there's no reason you can't do the same with terrestrial.

sommet: The price will be $499 RRP for a 250Gb and $599 for a 500Gb. It does have twin tuners - record two and watch another.

ever driven a 200hp car only to find the engine management limits it to 150hp? try watching 2.35:1 on a 21" 4:3 screen - can't hardly see anything!

mainly bcos pic appears too small w 2.35:1, detail becomes less than if played at (zoomed in at) 16:9 (yup you can say it may lose detail from "upscaling", but if you have my old tv that only does 720p, then it's just perfect to zoom in on shows recorded in 1080 line, of which only 720 lines are painted the rest are black - discard them :)

or i may need glasses - the way around that is to install the 1080p sony sxrd triple lcd projector and a 200" screen - only problem is it costs 21grand ... oh well at the mo vlc player zooms in at 16:9 @ for 1080 movies due to my screen limitation which is just perfect

I get it, just doesn't seem that long ago that people were saying "i hate black lines - paid for 29" would like to see picture in the whole of it, not this silly letterboxing". If you zoom in, you lose about 1/3 of the image don't you? Is that better? I still sometimes watch 2.35:1 on my old 4:3 29", it's not that bad. On a 50" 16:9 it's still pretty good! That's the equivalent of about 38" for height. Maybe you should sit closer?

Remember that scaling to full screen doesn't really give you "more detail" as you've lopped off the detail on the edges, or you've stretched what you already had to fill the screen, giving you a warped image. And also using a projector doesn't remove the black bars, it just makes the middle bit physically bigger.

The Hyundai looks interesting as a work around for now, should allow you to schedule off the sat EPG but hopefully record in HD via the terrestrial input. A lot of questions have been asked in one of the other threads for Freeview about PVR's, it will be interesting to see what they have to say.

A great freeview terrestrial pvr set top box should be able to do everything a htpc with pvr can do. My pc can record all channels from all 3 muxes at once. I have a fully functional remote, 24/7 epg and can use remote to setup recordings from epg. I wont even think of buying a freeview terrestrial pvr set top box till it can do all that.

The problem when you start messing with aspect ratios is that you miss out on detail in the movies when you crop the picture. A lot of TV shows are still shot with safe 4:3 areas and broadcasters in NZ still stick to 4:3 safe areas for their onscreen graphics because they know their feed is going out as 4:3 as well.

Movie producers however don't care - they film in 2.35:1 because that's essentially the defacto format for film and they take full advantage of this aspect ratio and don't factor in safe 4:3 or safe 16:9 areas which is why so many film transfers are all 2.35:1 these days - there is detail in many of these films that is lost if the aspect ratio is changed.
