If the show is in widescreen and from the US then it will be off an HD master. They don't shoot 16:9 SD in the US, unlike the UK.

This is one reason why a lot of cheaper talk shows are still 4:3.

Universal is demanding high definition premium which TV3 wont pay

Where did you read this?  TV3 would have negotiated all its contracts via Mediaworks (if that is the name). Seem strange that a supplier would demand more for HD when that is the native format they are shooting in.

if i was a supplier and could sell HD for more than SD i'd be finding a way to downsample the HD in order to be able to offer an inferior product.....  its cheaper to offer calls over new mobile telephone networks but they can sell it as "new" and "better" so they do... and they charge more for it...  lets not forget internet peering either  why do it for free when you can charge for the service?

the sensible option is not always the right business solution :p

I'll be advising my mate to get sky HD then, if he wants HD content just going to have to fork out the dollars. Probably free view HD  PVR will be close to $600 any way. Except for timinator my free view box will be gathering dust.

Saw last week 90210 went to C4 so no longer HD and DD. Maybe it rated poorly?

Heroes is shot on 3-perf 35mm film with Panavision G2 cameras and on 4-perf 35mm film with the Panavision Millennium XL. The film is telecined simultaneously to D5 and DVCAM 30i formats and finished at 24 fps on D5 tape.

Since th D5 format can handle

  • 323 Mbit/s (1080/59.94i/8CH, 720/59.94p/8CH, 480/59.94i/8CH)
  • 319 Mbit/s (576/50i/8CH)
  • 300 Mbit/s (1080/59.94i/4CH, 720/59.94p/4CH, 480/59.94i/4CH)
  • 258 Mbit/s (1080/23.98p/8CH, 1080/24p/8CH)
  • 269 Mbit/s (1080/50i/8CH, 1080/25p/8CH, 576/50i/8CH)
it's highly likely they could create a number of formats for distribution. For example for international distribution they could release the 576/50i version while for domestic HD broadcasts, the 1080/59.94i format.

The better question is why?
