Actually sbiddle I don't find that acceptable.  You belittle an issue that is shared by a lot of people seemingly because it doesn't affect you.... I'm with this guy over at the NZ Digital TV Forum - http://www.dtvforum.co.nz/forum/showpost.php?p=3441&postcount=17
Its not acceptable and I think it surprising to find an apologist here for Freeview's cock-ups.

I'm not apologising for Freeview - I'm merely pointing out that they are fully aware of the issue but that it does affect a small minority of users. Most people out there buying Freeview|HD boxes are doing it because they have flat screen 16:9 TV's and want a 16:9 HD picture. They are typically not users who have 4:3 TV's.

I know for a fact that all firmware updates and changes are tested by quite a large number of people, it's just obvious in this instance that they don't have anybody testing boxes who has a 4:3 TV and have overlooked an obvious issue that has resulted with the changes for the new MHEG5 updates.

This problems also has effects on 16:9 sets as well. Zoomed picture. Random 4:3 to 16:9 streched picture. Differernt aspect when STB grapics onscreen.
Do freeview even check that the updates even work ok before transmitting them?

Just come back from (TV-free) holiday and aspect ratio behaviour seems back to normal.  Russcolli - are you still experiencing this issue?

Thanks all for help.

Yes, is okay now and equally mysteriously Freeview are suddenly replying to my emails.  Pleased its fixed, lets hope that Freeview buck up their ideas a bit about client focused communications and publically acknowledging issues next time they have a technical issue.
p.s. lets also hope they put a real testing regime in place too.
Cheers

Actually two things - (1) I looked at that site very carefully at the time, and in the days following the initial posting, for any info and i couldn't find it, looked just now and found an undated release link (cute that they are claiming a date in the title though) at the bottom of a long page (i.e. off the bottom of the screen and in a hopeless place) and (2) its not the problem I or any of the other hundreds of people had - I have a Freeview approved HD receiver - the item you point out purports to be a release about non-approved receivers.  And (3) even the 14th was a good few days after the issue.
So a press release, out late, hidden on a badly designed site where few could find it, relating to receivers other than those discussed in this thread.  Hmmmm not sure I'm ready to let Freeview off the hook on that basis.
