Using Freeview app on a PS3 to feed the TV. No TVNZ app on the PS3.  No TVNZ on Demand for us.

Presumably to assist with their subs to remove ads model.

I assumed this myself.  There will be a number of annoyed people who bought Dish TV's set top boxes with Freeview On Demand built in for the convenience of a merged UI.  Just as well I've gradually upgraded  myself and parents' set top boxes with Xiaomi Mi Box and TV Sticks.

The Dish A2 has both the Freewiew On Demand app and the TVNZ On Demand apps by default.
As does our new Panasonic TV. I use the TVNZ app by preference as do many others to make use of the favourites selection.
TVNZ already have content on their streaming app that is not shared with the Freewiew app. It's not programmes that interest me but it's interesting they are doing this all the same.

That's a good point.

Likes of Greys Anatomy (yes still going somehow?) are on TVNZ on demand long before they are ever on broadcast TV.

Suspect they wouldn't be offered via the freeview app even now?

Bananabob:

I must admit that I stopped using Freeview On Demand for TVNZ because the TVNZ system allows you to have favourites and has a much better GUI than Freeview On Demand. I can't remember the last time I watched anything from Freeview On Demand --- Oh wait a minute yes I can I watched a TV3 programme about 2 weeks ago because my PVR didn't record it due to a power cut.

Regular user of the TVNZ app, which is pretty good (the biggest annoyance is it doesn't go automatically to the current series/episode), but I had completely forgotten that TV3 is available via Freeview on Demand. We've watched every episode of the current Grand Designs series (the only thing we watch on TV3) via a Chromecast!

It is actually - Season 17, Ep 1-3, on both the TVNZ app and also on Freeview On Demand - although our Samsung TV is too old to have the Freeview app, but via the remote/green function key method of accessing FoD, it shows it there.

It's a shame as we do just use the freeview app. We don't watch much TV when it airs so lose track of what channel actually shows what to know what app to look in. The freeview app just had it all inside to not have to care.

I do kind of miss what became youview in the UK, all the major broadcasters joined forces to make a freeview DVR and IPTV box in one. You could add premium channels through your ISP that they'd code in to the epg but you still got the main free channel via the aerial. All rolled up in one epg that you could also go backwards in and play from the on demand players directly from the epg. The UI was just simple and unified and ISPs practically gave the boxes away to push their channel packages. I was hoping freeview on demand would move to be more like that model.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Freeview is ‘supported’ by the media companies, by which they all contribute into the org and are meant to support development, launch new products etc. it’s never been particularly well funded, but I imagine this years upheaval, the sale of Mediaworks to discovery and general complexity in app development means the CBA level has been reached.

Apps are intensive effort, and the TV platforms are the Wild West compared to apple and google. I’m guessing the demand isn’t there to justify the ongoing work, and so they consolidate down to fewer channels...

Does this mean that the on FREEVIEW demand platform is facing an early death? In the UK, some of their channels seem to have moved to a freemium model, where you pay if you want to watch more content, or without adverts I think. Although they do also have BBC which is adfree and also free online in the UK. Not sure why TVNZ hasn't been sold off yet, as I thought RNZ was going to be turned into the national broadcaster for both TV and radio.

What does this mean? That I can no longer watch TVNZ programs on demand on my Panasonic DMR-HWT260 from June next year? Or will there be an update allowing for both forums of streaming?

Nutts: Could it be they plan to start charging for TVNZ on demand, like Neon etc

I seem to remember about a year ago seeing an article that TVNZ was considering having a two tier Ondemand. One free with ads like now and a paid version ad free.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. I was thinking that myself the other day, provided it is only a small monthly fee, something like $2.99. Much more than that would be greedy.
