Yeah it is calling x264 but an important thing is it has everything together to demux the audio/video, and transcode both to a different format, which keeps things simple in a 1 step process. The audio handling is something that many programs can't seem to do.

Flushed with success having converted a short 500Mb segment I tried to use it on a 3.3G 42 minute show. About 1/2 way through it caused my Vista box to crash and reboot! So much for that.

You might be able to get the problem fixed. I posted my logs/stackdump for deinterlacing issues and two bugs were fixed as a result.

Created no log. But I split the file into two and am processing each part separately. The first part completed without crashing - now processing the second part. Of course the proof of the pudding will be in playback - will it be in sync

No it went out of sync during the show. Since I had edited the show to remove ads using TS Packet Editor I tried running handbrake on a show with no editing. Only a sample of one but that result stayed in sync during the entire show which is good. But having to encode 20 minutes of ads wastes time. Clearly Handbreak isn't using the timestamps to maintain sync and relies on the fact that sync should be good across the entire video. So when sync is lost momentarily at a cut, players get it back by using timestamps - Handbrake and most conversion programs fail. Now I am going to see how I can edit MKV files to get rid of the ads.

Having more luck with Handbrake now. Now processing the entire show with ads. The output stays in sync. Then edit the ads out using avidemux which is relatively painless except uncovered an apparent bug in avidemux in that once the file is edited, the audio is lost. Shows up in mediainfo but won't play. Found a way around that - just pass the file through mkvmerge with no changes and it fixes the audio. Only minor issue is, even with one pass and modest compression settings, a one hour show takes 7 hours to process on my dual core Amd 3600. Guess it's time to upgrade?

So, just for giggles I simply changed the file extension of a TV3 recording from TS to M2TS and it played great on the PS3 without running it through TSRemux.

EDIT: Just to clarify, it's served to the PS3 via TVersity, and I'm assuming that does nothing to the data.

Interesting - must try that myself. I had given up playing content on the PS3 since I have a Popcorn Hour which is more flexible.

Hi,
Well actually HandBrake does pay a lot of attention to the standard for timestamps, I think you will find that your tool being used to cut sections of the stream is outputting an invalid stream (according to the standard). I bet it isn't informing the reader of the clock discontinuity, which it is supposed to do.

TVNZ is not broadcasting standards compliant streams in the first place, and often itself sends the clock discontinuity messages way after the actual discontinuity.
But since HandBrake must work in such an imperfect world where folks don't read or abide by standards, or people take chain saws to their streams and expect them to still work perfectly :), HandBrake has had its clock synchronisation changed (pretty much because of TVNZ) to better handle these streams.

There is no current release or snapshot with this updated code.

If using MP4 as your output format, don't forget to choose 64bit encoding so that it doesn't crash when you reach the 32bit max (~4Gb) for your output file.
I encode about 20 Freeview shows a week (100% handsfree, record, transcode, tag, and put into my media player) using HandBrake and haven't had an issue for a while (the last problem I had was with TVNZ and the clocks).

BTW. HandBrake is not a front end for other tools, it is totally self contained, it uses modified libraries (like x264) as and where appropriate. So it is not the same as using MeGUI. Of most importance is that HB uses its own MPEG-TS/PS demuxer which is a lot better than most others.

You could be right about the TS splitter I am using. I am now finding it's easier to use HB to encode the entire file, ads and all and then remove them later with avidemux.

But have found another problem which I posted to the HB forum and haven't received any useful response. If the ts file has errors in it and you are encoding to MKV, HB can just just stop/stall part way through the file. Out of interest I encoded the same file but setting dvix as the output and it processed it entirely which confirms one comment I received that HB isn't too good on handling ts files that have errors, outputting to MKV.

But it's the best tool so far I have found for compressing the ts transmissions
