Does anyone actually still watch Freeview? I watch the news, though I wish there were better options, and occasionally I will pause for something like Fair Go or Country Calendar. Is this not a dying industry making feeble attempts to stay relevant?

I went back to my tivo and pansonic PVR for recording since VTV died.  I think they used to have ondemand on freeview but then got rid of it, and instead you have to use the TVNZ or TV3 app, which is a PITA, and takes people out of the freeview interface. When the money could have been spent producing a decent freview app with ctachup functionatlity, sinilar to how the Vodafone TV worked.

Freeview is a joint venture, TVNZ and RNZ are just two of the partners. The funding for this and other costs are spread over the all partners. I think the the new branding is cool. Why is it when ever rebranding is done in Aotearoa there is  cries of "waste of money", "why are doing this" wasting taxpayer money" even when the changes are being done by non government entities. I remember the cries on GZ over the Spark and VF changes for example.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Indeed. I'd imagine that most people in UHF coverage would have fibre available, so get it onto fibre properly (not like the bitrate-starved streams available now), bring satellite up to HD and then kill off UHF. Not all on the same day, of course!

I think one of the challenges for Freeview is the fact that a lot of elderly are dependent on the UHF service. My parents would be terrified of the idea of installing a satellite dish, installing an app on their TV, or learning to use an Apple TV device.

It's getting fewer and fewer, but a lot still do. As it becomes a smaller part of peoples routines they will have to adjust, TVNZ seem to be doing an ok job with their apps other than only being no cost ad supported. Three however, their efforts are quite poor.

What is the point of re-branding Freeview when most viewers probably don't know, and surely don't need to know, what Freeview is?

Essentially, they just watch "telly".

Regardless of brand, all TV's sold in NZ work with the Freeview signal, they would not not be any use if they didn't.

On my TV receiving the terrestrial signal, the Freeview logo is displayed as a very small watermark on the screen only when the program guide is on the screen. Outside of that functionality I don't see the logo at all.

The logo could be anything - I don't care what it is.

I was out to lunch recently with friends who only have the option of Freeview via satellite as they live outside of terrestrial HD transmission coverage. They are rural and streaming via rural wireless broadband while possible, is iffy at best. The satellite feed is standard definition (SD), thus on their big-screen TV, the overall image quality is, well, shall we say, poor, when compared to DVD, Bluray or other HD or better sources.

The only way they can receive HD TV, is to subscribe to Sky.

The rebrand serves no purpose - it certainly does nothing for SD-only satellite feed viewers, and it does nothing to improve the content of the channels Freeview carry.

Imagine if they wrote

"we didn't waste a cent of taxpayer money on this , we fed it into mid journy with a few buzz woke keywords"

(SIGH)

Re cost to tax payers for the rebrand. Lets say it cost $100,000, there are approximately 3.3million tax payers in Aotearoa, the cost per tax payer is a whopping $0.03. If it cost $1,000,000 the cost per tax payer is $0.30. Now these calculations are based on the Government meeting the full cost and the other partners not contributing.

@Rikkitic I guess I am just tired of just about any change that is announced in Aotearoa be it a rebrand, cycle lane, speed limit, logo, sign, name brings about a chorus of objections. I swear this nation must be the most change averse peoples on the globe.

Rant over, drugs taken, heart rate down

It's about priorities, in this case, instead of spending money on quality, it's spent on useless fluff.

No, it's about one member's reaction to another member's post. You are replying to the wrong one.

I think the humour may have been targeting the lengthy, flowery press release for a change hardly noticeable from the original.

We’ve changed our logo from this, to this, was probably sufficient in this case.

Spark and One were complete rebrands with new brand names, and are both private companies, not taxpayer funded in anyway. Telecom as a brand was ancient and dated and I don't think anyone said that they shouldn't change their logo, but the 'Spark' logo does make more sense now withe h spark brand name. One is so generic as a brand.  Any design is going to get critiqued. It is perfectly normal. As is any modern artwork. Anyone has a right to voice their opinion as it often a personal feeling. IMO in this case it is largely just a logo tweak. Same colours and similar logo, and same name. But less visual NZ identity in the new logo. TVNZ in the past has reguarly changed their logo and I don't think they issue a press release when they do it, but it is a similar change to that.
