davidcole: So anyone know if the epg shows up anywhere.  I could potentially be a useful channel for dealing with conflcts....only until I get some more tuners though....

The EPG is available via EIT on DTH and MHEG-5 on DTH and DTT.

been quite handy already. A number of my conflicts have been resolved automatically by the myPVR software selecting PLUS1.

Agreed, pointless channel.  HDD DVD recorders are common now.  Goes to show how budget TV3 is, not shelling out for a new channel.

While plenty of people may knock the concept the reality is +1 channels have proved popular overseas - hence the reason TV3 have simply copied the concept.

old3eyes: TV3+1.  A complete waste of time.  They would have been better putting this money into making C4 into a HD channel..

It's my understanding that they are contractually obligated with Freeview to launch a new channel. As Mediaworks doesn't have any money at the moment, they went with the cheapeast possible option.

HDD DVD recorders certainly are common, but the vast majority of them can only record one programme at a time and recording scheduling conficts occur all the time. +1 channels provide one way to avoid the scheduling conficts.

When we can say that mult-tuner HDD recorders are common, then +1 channels will be pointless.

interestingly enough the channel appears on my samsung tv with no change, or intervention required by me.

But looking at the EPG it still mentions boston legal being in HD....even though the channel reports it's resolution as 576i.

C'mon. Did anyone here really expect a network station like TV3 to even consider doing it properly. They were, as stated by another, required to begin broadcasting on one more Freeview channnel within 24 months (I believe) of Freeview's startup & that is getting near.

They had stated they were going to begin broadcasting the new channel late last year, with Bathhurst being it's premier & the V8's running live & continuous.

When that didn't happen, I knew what was coming was going to be crap. Any station that continues its habit of interlacing old season's programming with the new (the latest of which is Bones)  proves it is contemptuous of its supposed client-base. They don't give a rat's-a$%& about you or me.

As for inventing new & brilliant ways to spin its advertisements over the air: the reason I haven't watched liveTV for nearly two decades & invested in multiple VHS units was to get rid of the incessent advertising.  Putting more on, especially if it encroached over the broadcast programme, any more than it already does, would make me turn off; permanently!

Plenty of other uses for my HTPC.

I suspect if they were given the same $Mils  that TVNZ were given to get new channels on Freeview then we may have seen some new stuff not the crap  of TV3+1 and C4  in SD

They have had to commit to providing this channel, so they have just slapped up some gib and squirted in some no more gaps. If cost is the problem, then variation, differentiation, separation and innovation is the answer.

There is nonoe of that here, and no attempt to attract the viewers. Notice the distinct lack of self promotion on tv3 for the plus1 channel? The mediaworks website (http://www.mediaworks.co.nz/Default.aspx?tabid=48&language=en-US) says they only have the two channels (TV3 and C4), and there is nothing on www.tv3.co.nz homepage. They obviously don't care whether people are watching it or not.

When 5.1 HD content they have bought doesn't get the ratings, or if it is 24, they put it on C4 in SD, and get something else scheduled, and then try to sneak re-runs in. This behaviour pisses off the people watching more than advertisements do!

I'm not talking about a constant ticker like in the news headlines or motor racing, but it could be done in such a way with certain content that would not be off-putting to viewers and therefore pleasing to advertisers. For example, there is a certain show or movie coming up that uses blatant product advertising (most of them do it!), they approach the proprieter of such goods, and ask them if they want to place a small banner to reinforce. Rather than interrupt the show at unacceptable points at unacceptable times, you have something that watchers will recognise will not interrupt the movie and will still attract sales. How about watermark advertising? You don't notice it that much but for some reason you always know what channel you're on? To be really frank, I don't mind advertisements, but I despise interruptions.

The bottom of the line for me is if they're just gonna slap up some gib and squirt no more gaps in, they may as well make it inviting to attract people to come in. They might turn a profit, or they might not - they can always put in a plus1 channel - after all, that's popular overseas (where there are multiple competing free-to-air and pay-tv companies in the same market).

I had a few issues tuning TV3+1 into my Windows 7 media centre machine, but I was glad I did.
Will make things a lot easier when it comes to recording on my single DVB-T tuner.

Really I don't see the issue here. If you don't like what TV3 is doing, then don't watch it.
