It already exists. It's called RNZ.

TVNZ7 did some amazing stuff for next to no dollars in the scheme of things.

Netflix and other streamers are not going to tell our stories unless a studio gets NZ On Air funding to make something then we pay a second time to watch it. None of them will do our quality/long form journalism like TVNZ's Q&A (that the PM can't find time to appear on) or RNZ (unless Michael Laws gets into Parliament who has already said he'll shut it down).

Our fourth estate is becoming alarmingly like the US being strangled from being able to do their jobs. Ironically most of those 'alternative' broadcasters advocating closures only got their name because they were trained in public broadcasting, raising the drawbridge so nobody can follow them.

I read somewhere recently that Aussie are making streamers have a certain percentage of Aussie made shows. Perhaps we could do something similar.

TV Journalism is dead and buried in this country, sadly. I doubt there is enough talent or integrity to resurrect it.

I think it's sad that we have seen politicians over the last three terms make partisan decisions about which programmes they will be interviewed on. It reflects poorly on them and it's unfortunate that many platforms aren't more neutral. Jack Tame stands out, but partly because everyone else is so bad.

I don't remember Clark (apart from her grudge against John Campbell🤣) or Key picking and choosing like that.

Nah, she was also very choosy. She pretty much ended investigative journalism in this county. She continued to have a combative relationship with the media afterwards during her time at the UN as well.

The unfortunate thing about the county getting its news from fragmented and partisan sources is that we loose our collective will, unity and become divided. This has a plethora of down-stream social and security consequences.

Before TV licensing went out, I had a guy at my door threatening to come back with the Police because I wouldn’t give him my name, and I told him I didn’t have a TV.

I was hardly ever home then, so if they did come back didn’t see them. So glad those days are over.

I’ve watched a few YouTube videos of the licensing authorities busting people in their own homes in the UK. They run around in vans and it looks like they can detect what houses have TV’s. Glad I’m not living there.

The Key government was the start of refusing to do media appearances when it didn't suit them. It resulted in the death of the 7pm news show as they couldn't do a serious show without ministers appearing when things were tough.

Each government has become more clever in it's media management with a subsequent reduction in democracy.

Does it matter whether it comes out of general taxes or a specific charge?

Some degree of journalism is essential and that's not far off what you pay for an annual newspaper subscription.

Can of course make arguments about entertainment vs journalism but it's better than solely chasing ad views or sponsorship.

Are you kidding? My mother pays Stuff $152.10 per month now for The Post and the Manawatu Standard. £180 per year is quite a bit less than that.

I pay $290 a year for Newsroom Pro and I consider it a good investment to keep journalism alive, but I would object to being forced to redirect that spend to a government owned broadcasting entity. I certainly couldn't afford to pay for both.

I can vividly remember Lindsay Perigo's campaign to scrap the broadcasting fee back in the late 90s. I think he and his supporters ended up taking a class action to argue that it was an illegal tax. I really don't think we want to open up that can of worms again.

They probably have to do this as part of the licensing agreement.

I wouldn't support a specific fee. For starters ... too hard to enforce. That's why the NZ on Air fee was wrapped into general taxes.

RNZ is better than TVNZ by a decent stretch, but it isn't the bastion of balanced reporting it used to be. You'd have to go back to before Espiner and Ferguson to find that.
