Your TV can definitely only receive DVB-T as no TVs available have DVB-S tuners. Bunny ears are not sufficient given your area as DVB-T signals are actually way lower power than analog signals. The fact is that if a VHF antenna can't supply sufficient UHF signal then bunny ears definitely won't.

I would stick with DVB-T and have your antenna replaced as you will get better quality images with DVB-T tuner inbuilt to TV than with DVB-S decoder.

EDIT: Cable run from antenna may also need replacing.

ok. we are just renting the property so we can't really do enough about the antenna issue.

we have decided to buy a tv tuner that can take dvb-s and dvb-t. we will use the satellite instead. we are in the process of setting up the tv tuner and we would like to know what satellite to use. we selected telecom and it didn't pick up anything.

Satellite is Optus D1, transponders are 12456 and 12483 MHz, both have symbol rate of 22,500 KSym/sec with FEC 3/4. Sky dishes have used LNBs (low noise block) with frequencies of 11300 and 10750 MHz.

Confused now? For the price of the 'TV Tuner' you just bought, you could have probably paid for an aerial technician to come and align/repair/replace your existing aerial. Believe me, you will get a better picture with the inbuilt TV tuner you already have. Just go to www.freeview.co.nz and if you live in an area that can receive UHF DTV it will be well worth the money. Im sure the landlord wont mind you sorting out the aerial for him either.

A good check would be to see if the TV can pick up Prime analogue. That would tell you if the aerial was half way decent. Plus perhaps getting a tech to fix the aerial is a good thing but the OP notes he is renting so he wouldn't want to replace the aerial without the landlord's consent and then it's an investment that cannot be recouped.

a few posts back it was noted that the aerial was only a VHF aerial.... that would probably require a new aerial, new cable run too. the DVB-S box is probably the cheaper solution for now, and it can be sold on again later.. an aerial installer probably costs over $200 based on the quotes i had...

we really want to get it connected through uhf. until we realised we only had vhf. the landlord would probably be happy if we install a uhf aerial. but we are thinking we won't be able to bring it with us if we leave this place. aside from that, we are on the process of setting up a htpc. that might be a good addition to it.

by the way, back to my query:
we selected Optus D1 and we left the LOF1, LOF Switch, LOF2. also we selected None (Single LNB). we left Enable Encrypted Channels Found unticked. i wanted to post the screenshot but again, i don't know how. :)

i couldn't find the symbol rate and frequencies. we left it to search for channels and nothing was found.

Give LOF1 and LOF2 both the same value, either 10750 or 11300.

shall i tick None (Single LNB)? other choices are: 22Khz A/B Switch, DiSE qC 1.x A/B/C/D

there is still no channel found. :( we tried both 10750 and 11300 for LOF1 and LOF2. what do i need for LOF (Switch)? by default, LOF (Switch) is 11700.

we are using WinTV v7, if this helps.

Set LOF switch to be above transponder frequency, e.g., 12700.

EDIT: Transponder frequencies mentioned earlier are horizontal polarity.
