You might also find that you end up putting Media Portal in the bin where it belongs (WinTV 7 by Hauppauge should already be there, however it does make Media Portal look good) - or you might use MediaPortal II when its out in 7 years time (it will cook toast as well - but not on both sides until after the beta is finished)...
Nothing wrong with Mediaportal - it's great. All of our TV is watched through it, and WAF is very high (higher than the S1 Tivo's we used to have).
Other than its user interface (which hasn't changed for 5 years), its incredibly fragile, if you look at it even slightly sideways it breaks, its development cycle is slow to non existent (MediaPortal II - what is it, when's its coming???).
There's a billion versions of it, some work, some don't, some know how to make it work, many don't.
Its produced by a bunch of geeks who couldn't get laid in a knock shop, because they'd be too busy working out who should do what first, and in what order, as well as what they should wear. Whats a user interface anyway. Which one of them left the money at home? Should they write an application/module so they can find the way?
Some say it customisable - which is a nice way of saying you need to spend hundreds of hours fixing the stuff that doesn't work like it should in the first place.
Its also skinable, which means its just plain ugly in the first instance. And when you skin it, it looks like Star Wars mated with Avatar and had green babies, great if you sit around dreaming about the SciFi channel, but for normal people its a bunch of big carrot filled puke...
Some say its configurable - which is a nice way of saying they can't design a user interface, so they let everyone see everything, even the stuff no one needs...
It really is the answer to everyone's questions... Which would be great if the people asking the questions knew what they wanted in the first place...
Like they say - you can put lipstick on a pig...
