using a digistar 811U. Very good - had no problems at all since updating the firmware about nine months ago.

Can you watch a finished recording and record a program on that unit at the same time?

No - only has a single tuner. You would need a MUCH more expensive unit to be able to do this.
Does have time shift recording though which is very good for such a cheap unit.

Currently experimenting with the signal issues of DVB-T.  Using a usb KWorld dual tuner (399UR) purchased from JayCar. The 399UR works very well under Linux when it has signal, even weak crappy signal.

Thanks, a very useful find. I've found it is very tricky business to get a good DVB-T tuner (especially an USB one). My recent find - the PCI AverTV Super 007 DVB-T. The price, sensitivity of the tuner and quality of the picture are excellent... Though you'd need last mercurial drivers if running under Linux.

That's pity. Was hoping to get some as a backup. The single tuner is not an issue for this kind of tricks. My cheap computer-based pvr has a single tuner as well but no problem with watching a finished recording (or some avi, or doing other businesses like playing music) and recording at the same time. I think it is connected to the processor power or a mux. Anyway good to know. Thanks :)

Twin Nova-S DVB-S pci cards work a treat for me. Under MythTV I have each one set for 4 virtual tuners.  So in theory with an even mix of shows across the two transponders I can do 8 recordings at once.  With a family of 4 I regularly hit 4-6 shows all over lapping.

I just made sure I had done an apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree and the firmware all just loaded up.  It MIGHT have worked without doing that.  But in case anyone gets one and hits a snag that should sort them.

So if I have only one physical tuner, the 4 virtual tuners is a reasonable maximum under MythTV on NZ DVB-S?

The same steps should be done for AverTV Super 007 DVB-T.

Panasonic DMR-BW850. Had to be user friendly for her indoors. Works really well. Only catch no MHEG-5. It makes it harder to record programs but still light years ahead of the 20 year old Mitsi VCR it replaced.

As usual two weeks after I bought it on what was a good price at the time $1100 they dropped the price to $799. A bit more expensive than other products around but it does have a Blu ray recorder built in.

Takes some concerted playing (or read the manual) to figure out how to play back a recorded show when there is a disk in. Stupidly easy when I figured it out.

Zinwell 620hd, with usb 320gb drive and Hong Kong firmware that enables basic PVR function (No EPG integration but it does allow 2 channel recording on same mux).

GBPVR with two tuners - a Hauppage PVR250 which records from a TCL cable box controlled by a USB UIRT and a Hauppauge Nova-T-500 (?) which records Freeview. The Nova-T can record two channels at once so theoreticallly can record 3 channel at the same time but have never needed more than two.

Don't watch content via the PC - run MyIhome on the PC and watch content on two connected Popcorn Hours (one is a A200 which can decode the wretched AAC-HE LATM audio that Freeview uses).

I have the Homecast 9200DTR. Overall I am happy with it. There were some early reviews of the device here on Geekzone.
